I'm trying to get two monitors up and running, so I have replaced a GeForce4 video card with a Radeon 9250 with two video ports. I have uninstalled the GeForce4 drivers, but I am getting errors when trying to install the drivers for the Radeon card. I have used the files from both the included CD and also the Internet download.

The error that results from the installation wizard is:
"Cannot install this hardware"
"There was a problem installing this hardware"
"Radeon 9250" (or "Radeon 9250 Secondary" - presumably for the second port)
"An error occurred"
"The parameter is incorrect" (!)

Any solutions?

Dont know much about video cards, but you could try checking your bios if you have vga palette snoop enabled, usually thats for most older cards that have color problems or errors, so make sure that is disabled.

Also check your motherboard specifications/bios for agp/pci shared slots.

Are you booting off the card?

Are you running your screen off the card, as In you have no other video on your motherboard, and you are using the card to connect your monitor.

I am booting the PC with the Radeon card installed. I have CRT monitors connected to both the vga port and the DVI port via a VGA adaptor. Both show the same image (so I have turned one off, but it demonstrates that both ports are working) and only one monitor is visible in control panel. Since the card has exclamation marks on both ports in control panel, I guess the PC is using some standard VGA default that allows me to view the monitors.

You most likely need to reinstall your motherboard drivers and then install the radeon drivers. I sounds to me like you haven't got the mobos vga driver installed.

I'll try the motherboard drivers with my next boot.

My motherboard is an ASUS P4S800
ACPI BIOS rev 1004

The previous video card was a GeForce4 MX440 8X

I've now checked the BIOS and the only parameters that I can find that might have anything to do with video are:
Graphics aperture size: 64Mb
AGP30 capability: 8x Mode
AGP Fast write capability: enabled
Video memory code mode: UC
Onboard PCI IDE enable: Both
IDE bus master support: enabled

I'm no tech, so these don't really mean anything to me, except that a couple of them look like they relate to the old GeForce4 card (maybe)

Be sure that the Std VGA Adapter is listed/installed under Display Adapter in Dev Manager; if not u need to change the display adapter to this, befor installing ATI Display Adapter drivers.

Well, I said I wasn't a techie, so here's hoping that this question isn't too dumb. As soon as I uninstall the error video controllers, the Display Adaptors heading disappears from Device Manager. How do I ensure 'that the Std VGA Adapter is listed/installed under Display Adapter in Dev Manager'?

elanus, sorry--for some reason it seems that my email notification
when someone posts to the thread that i hav subscribed to has stopped notifying me when someone adds a new post.

Unfortunately though i am not quite sure how make sure the std vga adapter is installed 1st in XP befor installing the Radeon drv's for ur graphics card. I know how to do that in Win98SE and WinMe. But i am not sure how to do in XP. I'll look into it and see what i can find out. Perhaps in the mean time someone else might be able to help u with that.
I recently had a somewhat similar situation with a RadeonVE
wher i was tryin to install the new updated drv's for RadeonVE which is the same as the Radeon7000. XP kept installin the included drv's for the RadeonVe but it kept causin the system to crash befor i could install the newly downloaded drv's from the Ati website. Real pain in the butt. I din't wanna fool aroun with it anymore so i just upgraded my graphics card to the Gigabyte Radeon9550 listed in my specs. Lik i say, i'll see what i can come with playin aroun with my own XP installation.

Also too hav u installed the AGP drivers for u MB model form the ASUS website like skiivywaver had suggested.
That might help if there is an underlying problem/issue there
