I have a Radeon 9200. Went to the ATI website, and downloaded the 6.11 package, which seems to be relatively new.
Shall I still use the older 6.5 package for my card?

Triple6, not sure whom you are asking the question from? My experience below:
I had previously downloaded 6.11 and tried to install, it had left me in a state where the ATI display adapter in "device manager" shows as yellow marked.
I kept on getting failures on both 6.5 and 6.11 installs as myself (an administrator). I then did the following:
- logged in the Safe mode with Administrator
- removed all traces of ATI drivers.
- Reboot, logged in Safe Mode again
- I got something like "need the default vga driver first". I couldn't find it to install that separately. I have the vga.sys in windows/driver directory already.
- I then did the 'rollback driver" for the vga device, which rolled it back to 8.252 of ATI driver.
- I tried reinstalling the newer 6.11 (as well as 6.5 version in a separate try) to no avail. It says I need a vga driver before installing this.
So overall I am still with a yellow ati display adapter. Most things seem to work fine, except that I now have slowness when scrolling (e.g. with firefox going page up and down I can see delay).

Ahh, I see that you're not the original poster - thats why we recommend all users to start their own thread. I've split you off from the other thread.
After uninstalling the ATI drivers, Windows restarts and should find the video card and ask for a driver. Just click Next and Finish all the way through. Then the ATI driver should install correctly. You cannot Cancel the Found New Hardware wizard or the ATI video driver will not install.
The release notes for the Catalyst 6.6 and newer say they do not support Radeon 9250 or older cards(ie. Radeon 9200, 9000, 8500, 7000/VE cards).

I would use the older package. I have a 9200 in a secondary machine with W2K and the new drivers were just not compatible. I went back to the older version and all was fine. I believe it was even older than the 6.5 (6.1?) but I'm not where I can check it. Rule of thumb, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I have tried starting completely afresh. For now what happens is that the first time I reboot after a fresh install of the driver (8.252.0.0 dated 5/3/2006), all works fine, but on 2nd reboot it starts showing the yellow mark against the driver.
I'll try downloading 6.1 driver and trying that out. The trouble is that all available drivers on the website arrived in 2006.
griffinspc, if you get a chance pl post the driver version running on your machine (in Device Manager, properties for the video driver, driver tab).

I am having no luck. By now I have tried the following (all done by completely cleaning off any leftover ATI stuff using AtiCimUn.exe file, as well as always logging in as Administrator in safe mode).
- 6.11, 6.5 and 6.1 driver packages on the ATI website
- the original cd that came with it, its ATI control panel version 6.14.10.5134
In every case I have tried doing the following ways:
1. Uninstall all ATI stuff. Reboot, in safe mode, window pops up suggesting to install driver, cancel it and install the driver using the Setup.exe provided in the package.
This doesn't finish saying that I need the default vga driver installed first.
2. Uninstall all ATI stuff. Reboot, in safe mode, window pops up suggesting to install driver, let it search for the default driver, it doesn't find it even with the Windows XP install CD. I can then choose to give it the directory for one of the above packages, and it will then install it.
In all cases, when I reboot and login as usual, the device mgr always has a yellow ! against the Display Adapters - Radeon 9200 Series.
It seems like I need to find the "default" vga driver from somewhere first to fix this problem.
Any help will be deeply appreciated.

Triple6, that's my scenario 2. In that case it doesn't find a suitable driver, and finishes without installing anything. Only if in this scenario I give it the specific path does it install the Radeon9200 driver but it shows the yellow ! later on.Triple6 said:

I'm assuming you added this card at some point, does the machine have on board graphics too?

It continues to show me the yellow !. I can then install a new driver and that shows the same issue.Triple6 said:
Perhaps my card has a problem. Is there card diagnostics software that I can use? Fwiw I don't think it has a problem, since I can see it working fine on my Linux install (on the same exact machine, setup for dual boot).
I'll try installing the Omega drivers and see if they behave any differently.

Tried the Omega drivers, but it didn't make any difference. I still see the yellow ! against the driver, and it is not working.botham2002 said:
FWIW, on Linux dmesg confirmed that the card was recognized as a 4x AGP card. Both the card and the mobo are able to do 8x AGP! So the card certainly works on the Linux, and I can see the difference especially when scrolling in a browser, etc.

Nope, no onboard graphics. Can't remember, have you tried any different refresh rates with the Windows install? Start in safe mode with VGA, set the refresh rate to something modest like 72Hz and 800 x 600 reboot and see what happens?

You could try using DriverCleaner: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3214.html to remove any left over driver components before re-installing.

FWIW, I did try the drivercleaner but it didn't help. I am living with a limping Windows display, don't have the time or energy to reinstall from scratch.
