I have recently installed quickbooks 2003 and when I try using it I'm told system resources low close windows. This happens when this is the only program running. I have windows ME and my computer shows plenty of free space??

Could be that your resources are low, Right Click the My Computer icon on your desktop, then L/click properties, then prefomance. Should list system resources. Check it with Q/B open and closed.

Well I checked the performance and with qb closed it was 57% free and with qb open it was 14% pretty scary. I then followed your link and unchecked those items not required to run in the background and now with qb closed it's 80% but with qb open it's still only 14% free. Now what can I do?

It would appear you are experincing a memory leak.
