I was told by a friend that icons and items on the desktop can effect computer performance. I've never heard anyone say anything like removing desktop items will increase performance. Icons are just very small pictures, so I don't see how it could be any worse than running a desktop background. The performance increase or decrease would have to be very small. I just want a definite answer from someone else, so please give your advice. :)

I have a blank desktop and I notice a slight improvement. When you minimize a window and the Desktop re-appears, the icons have to be re-displayed and it takes a few milliseconds to do so. It also takes a little time to re-display the wallpaper.

Right-click on the desktop > arrange icons by > un-check show desktop items and see if there is any noticeable change.
