Questions about upgrading graphics card/cpu in Windows 7

913 Views 7 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  flavallee
My pc which I purchased online was built to spec but I've since changed out the graphics card to the current one which is NVIDIA GeForce GTX750ti. My processor is an AMD FX(tm) 8320 Eight-Core. I have 16GB memory and 1TB hard drive.

Can I upgrade to a faster graphics card based on the processor I have. If I can what would be recommended as faster. I am a flight sim enthusiast so faster frame rate is important. Also, if I get a faster graphics card will I have to update my processor? Is the CPU hardwired or can it be replaced like a graphics card?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide to me.

What's the brand name and model number and revision number of the motherboard?

What's the brand name and model number and wattage of the power supply?

Thank you for responding to my inquiry. Listed below are the specs on my pc drawn from the utility provided by Tech Support Guy. I hope this helps. I don't know what the power supply looks like to give you the info on that component. Is it critical to your providing help to me?

Your current AMD processor and AMD graphics card use a combined total of 185W of power.
Your current AMD graphics card requires a minimum of a 300W power supply.
If you upgrade to a better and more power-hungry graphics card, the power supply needs to be able to handle the power needs of all of the computer's hardware.
That's why its description and wattage (and also the description of the new graphics card) needs to be known.

It's not necessary to upgrade the AMD processor if you upgrade the AMD graphics card.
The AMD FX-8370 appears to be the best one if you decide to also upgrade the processor.

I'm not a hardware upgrade expert, so my input here is limited.

Hello,
I found my power supply. It's an ORION, model #HP585DB, serial number S1403000739. Also the graphics card I currently have installed is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti. Based on this information, how do things look for going to a faster graphics card? I also understand about your knowledge base. Thanks in advance.
The Orion HP585DB is rated at 585 watts.
It has only a 1-year warranty and outputs only 15 amps on the 12 volt rail, so it's a low-quality model.

I have no doubt that the hardware/upgrade experts here would advise you to replace it with a better quality power supply.
If that power supply overloads and blows, it can take out the motherboard and all the hardware in it.

Thanks very much Frank for all your input. I will definitely take your advice before launching into a high powered graphics card. Blowing up my computer is definitely not the route I want to take.

Merry Christmas to you and your family.
You're welcome, and good luck with the graphics card upgrade. :)
