My HD has a power switch, I use it for data storage, then unplug the USB cable when finished. I then turn off the HD. Question is if turning off and on the HD is worse or beter then leaving it on al the time.
External should be turned off if not in use.You do not need to unplug the USB cable each time unless you need the port for another device, other wise just turn off the power switch when not in use.
You should use the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray to release the drive before powering it down. I don't pull the plug on my USB/Firewire drives after I use them, I just safely remove them and turn them off.
Well, if you power cycle them every couple of minutes for a couple of months, it would probably not be good for them. OTOH, for normal use, mine are off unless I'm using them at that time.
