What is the best combination to buy?, I'm wanting to build a P4 2G system running Win XP. I was thinking about the new chipset "VIA Apollo P4X266" (which will allow the cheaper than Rambus) DDR memory to fit onto 478pin processor.

My usage is mainly Internet but I also want to fully utilise the new system for music and video plus dvd etc etc. With this being a large outlay I do not want to start upgrading again too soon so the best quality parts are essential.

I've looked at a few websites but not being an expert I'm a bit confused by it all. "Abit" seem to do a few good boards, Intels seem to be the D850?.

I didn't want to swamp this board with too much data but I can email a list of all parts I hope to use if it will help with the right answers. I have a good budget to work with. Thank you.

The "Best to buy" is so subjective. In all the reviews I've read, the i850 chipset based systems are still the performance leaders. They are also the most expensive.

In terms of performance, SiS645 chipset is the next best. The problem is it's new and I'm having trouble finding any boards that are available right now.

In terms of what MoBo brand to buy ... that's a can 'o worms. My personal favorite is Asus. You're right that Abit makes good boards, too. Most of the bigger board makers have good products, it's really just a matter of finding a board with all of the features that you want.

Good luck!
