I apologize for my bad technical knowledge but I hope someone can help me out here.

I am running Windows XP and I was in "Add or Remove Programs" under the Control Panel. Now I don't know what exactly happened next but one program apparently got deleted, which caused my sound to stop working. Now the Sound Recorder, Volume Control etc are no longer on my System and when I click on Audio Devices in the Control Panel, my options are greyed out. Can somebody help me on this one?

start/all programs/accessories/system tools/system restore

follow prompts.

If that doesn't work, check your device drivers.
