Problems with Internet Explorer

i have a problem closing web pages on Internet Explorer - if i click on the "X" of select "close" from file menu or even go through the Task Manager my computer just bleeps at me. Doesnt take long before dozens of windows are open and the whole thing grinds to a halt!
I am running MacAfee Virus Scan 2004 which i update regulary!
