I some how got something on my computer that makes pop-ups appear on my computer that tell me that I have a virus. I ran a scan and it said there's TrojanSPM/LX. Is there a way to get rid of it? My normal antivrius and spyware won't work. I am concerned that there is really a trojan in my computer that is eating away at things. Please help!

Hello nqueen23 and welcome to Tech Support Guy

My name is curlylad and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I have to let experts check the content of my fixes before I post them so be patient.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess , simply post back with your query and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

OK, the first thing I need you to do is download HijackThis

  • Click this link HijackThis to start the download process
  • Click the Save button, click My Computer button on the left
  • Double click C Drive, double click Program Files
  • Click the Create a new folder button (3rd from the left of the 4 buttons next to the Save in dialog box)
  • Name the folder HJT or HijackThis and double click to open it
  • When the new folder opens click Save button bottom right
  • Next click the Run button
  • Click Do a system scan and save a log file
  • A log file will now be created in a Notepad document
  • Copy and paste the log and post it back to this thread, Do Not start a new thread.

I will review the infromation and advise of any further steps as soon as possible.

Good evening nqueen23

Here are your first instructions.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

When I receive the log I will review it and report back as soon as possible.

Good afternoon nqueen23

There are a lot of instructions for you to follow below.
Please read through the whole thing first so that you understand what you need to do.
When you have read through it, before you start the procedure, if there is any part that you do not understand then simply post back with your query,Do Not guess !

OK, here are your instructions.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Good evening nqueen23

Your log's looking a lot better but please stay with me as there is still some work to do.

STEP 1

Update Java

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of perceived vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 .

To check your version to see if it is the latest version, Please go to this link to verify your version to get the updates needed:

You'll need to use IE and allow ActiveX for this update. Follow the instructions on that page to verify Your Java software.

Or you can get the manual download here:

Once you have installed the latest update, please go to Add/Remove Programs and remove all older instances of Java listed there.

STEP 2

Create an Uninstall List
  • Open HijackThis
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save List...
  • Save the list to your Desktop
  • Please post the list back in your next reply

STEP 3

P2P File Sharing

You are running a P2P filesharing programme.

Ares
  • Many of these programmes come with unwanted components bundled with them.
  • If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does click here.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P programme, it is only the programme that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
My recommendation is you uninstall it.

STEP 4

Online Scan

  • Please go HERE to run PandaActiveScan...
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to your desktop.

STEP 5

Report Back

I would now like from you:-
  • The Uninstall List
  • The Panda Active Scan Report
  • A fresh HijackThis Log
  • Also please tell me how your system is now running now, are there any of the original problems or perhaps something else ?

I will review this new information and post back any further necessary steps as soon as possible.

Good Evening nqueen23

Here are your next instructions.

STEP 1

It appears that you still need to update to the latest version Java

Update Java

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of perceived vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment Version 6 .

STEP 2

Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available.
  • Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
  • On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
  • Click the Continue button
  • Click Run, and click Run again
  • Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

When the installation is complete go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.

STEP 3

WildTangent Web Driver

Although its not technically considered spyware it does have built in components to update itself and gather information about the computer system including
  • Operating System Version
  • CPU Type and Speed
  • Memory Amount
  • Video Card type and Driver Version
  • Sound Card type and Driver Version
  • DirectX Version
  • Location that the Web Driver was installed from.

My advice would be to uninstall this via Add/Remove Programs

STEP 4

Viewpoint

I see Viewpoint installed..

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article.

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present:
  • [*]Viewpoint
    [*]Viewpoint Manager
    [*]Viewpoint Media Player

STEP 5

AVG Anti Spyware

You are using the free version of AVG Anti-Spyware.
This is a 30 day trial which includes real-time protection, after the 30 day trial if you wish to keep the free version then the real-time protection is removed but the service remains on your system.
This service can therefore be removed as it is unnecessary and this will save on system resources.

To disable the service follow this instruction.
  • Click 'Start', click 'Run'
  • Type 'services.msc, click 'OK'
  • Locate and right click over 'AVG Anti-Spyware Guard'
  • Select properties
  • Click on the startup type drop down box
  • Select disabled
  • Click 'Apply' and 'OK'
  • Close the services window.

If in future you wish to upgrade to the full version simply reverse the instructions above.

STEP 6

Report Back
  • Please now report back telling me if you are still experiencing your original problems.
  • Are there any other or new problems
  • Also is the system running OK or is it excessively slow

Please also post back another fresh HijackThis Log.

Good evening nqueen23

How are you geting on with my instructions ?
I haven't heard from you in nearly 2 weeks and am concerned that there may still be some problems with your system.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you require me to help you clean your system, if you no longer want any help that is fine, please however inform me of this and I will unsubscribe from the thread.
You must be aware that should I unsubscribe from the thread I will no longer receive notification of your replies.

If you do require further help then please reply after completing my last set of instructions and we will continue on from there.

Hope to hear from you soon.

I'm sorry for the delay. I thought that my computer was running Ok since the original problems were gone but now my compter is running really slow. I don't know if it has anything to do with the problem from before or not. Here's my most recent hijack this log.

Good Evening nqueen23

Nice to have you back. :)

OK, your system does not appear to have any malware or infection that could be causing the behaviour that you are refering to or experiencing.

We will try a few trouble shooting tips and then get a few scans from other tools.

STEP 1

Please follow all the instructions in the following article

Computer and browser slowness are not always malware related. Poor performance can be the result of disk fragmentation, disk errors, corrupt system files, too many startup programs, unnecessary services running, not enough RAM, etc. As your system gets older it becomes filled with more files/programs and has a natural tendency to slow down so regular maintenance is essential. Here are a few things you can do to improve speed and system performance:

For browser problems, see "Its not always malware: How to fix the top 10 Internet Explorer issues" and "How and Why to Clear Your Cache". If your having connectivity issues or errors such as Page cannot be displayed see "Repair/Reset Winsock settings" and "Troubleshooting Internet Connection Problems".

Defrag your system. Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when a file is opened. Disk Defragmenter consolidates fragmented files and folders on the hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. This speeds up reading and writing to the disk. Read "The Importance of Disk Defragmentation" for instructions.

Check for disk errors by running CHKDSK in "SAFE MODE" or from the Recovery Console. In the Check Disk dialog box, select the "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, click "Start" and have it repair anything it finds. As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors which slow down hard disk performance and make data writing difficult. Check Disk scans the hard drive and verifies the logical integrity of a file system by checking for system errors, lost clusters, lost chains, and bad sectors. When encountering logical inconsistencies in file system data, it will perform the necessary actions to repair the file system data.

Check for damaged, altered or missing critical system files by running the System File Checker. If SFC discovers that a protected file has been damaged, altered or missing, it restores the correct version of the file from the cache folder. You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to run sfc and it may ask you to insert your XP Installation CD so have it available.

Clean up your hard drive by removing unused programs and transferring old data, pictures, music files to a CD or an external hard drive. When you have moved/saved the files you want to keep, run Disk Cleanup and let it scan your system for files to remove. "Don't clean out the Prefetch folder" - This is a common myth that will not improve performance.

As an alternative to Disk Cleanup you can download and scan CCleaner.
(Starting with v1.27.260, the standard build installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which is checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, remove the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead.)Check for any unnecessary running services. If you have a typical installation, many services are configured as "automatic"; that is, they start automatically when the system starts or when the service is called for the first time. Use "Black Viper's Services Configuration hosted by MajorGeeks" to help fine tune this area.

Check for any unnecessary applications loading at startup when Windows boots with MSConfig. Some startup programs are necessary so be careful what you disable. If you are unsure what any of the startup entries are or if they are safe to disable, then search one of the following Startup Databases:
StartupList Index
Startup Programs Database

Note: MSConfig.exe is a troubleshooting utility used to diagnose system configuration issues. Although it works as a basic startup manager which allows you to enable/disable auto-start programs, msconfig should not be used routinely to disable startup programs.

A better alternative is to use a startup manager. If you have have Spybot S&D 1.4 installed, launch it, go to Mode and select Advanced. Then go to Tools, select System Startups. You will be provided with a list of programs that load when Windows starts. If you untick an entry it will no longer run at startup. This will allow you to experiment and see how your system performs with any of them disabled. Other startup managers you can download and use for free are Startup Control Panel, Autoruns and Starter by CodeStuff.

Remove any third party "Memory Manager" or "Optimizer". Windows XP memory management was designed to make the best use of Ram and these memory management utilities defeat that purpose. They push applications out of RAM into the pagefile, creating holes in the RAM and by doing so, slow down your computer.

Disable some visual effects. While visual embellishments that may be attractive, they don't do anything else for you. Disabling some of them frees up system resources and makes the operating system perform better. Right click My Computer, choose > Properties > Advanced, click on "Settings" under performance...UNcheck all the visual effects, except for the last three. Click "Apply", then "OK", then "OK" again. Then right click your desktop and choose > Properties > Appearance > "Effects...Uncheck the first two boxes and hit "OK".

Adding more RAM is a quick solution that can have a dramatic affect on your system's speed and responsiveness. You can check how much RAM you have by going to Start > Program Files > Accessories > System Tools > System Information and look at your System Summary. For more info see "Understanding, Identifying and Upgrading the RAM in your PC".

• For more suggestions and performance tips read:
"Restore Your Computer's Performance with Windows XP"
"XP Performance Tweaks"
"Performance Boost for XP"

When you are all done be sure to Create a new Restore Point to enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state keeping all the changes you just made.
STEP 2

AVG Anti Rootkit

* Click here to download AVG Anti Rootkit and save it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on the AVG_AntiRootkit_1.0.0.13.exe file to run it.
  • Click "I Agree" to agree to the EULA.
  • By default it will install to "G:\Program Files\GRISOFT\AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta".
  • Click "Next" to begin the installation then click "Install".
  • It will then ask you to reboot now to finish the installation.
  • Click "Finish" and your computer will reboot.
  • After it reboots, double-click on the AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta shortcut that is now on your desktop.
  • Click on the "Perform in-depth search" button to begin the scan.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it complete.
  • When the scan is finished, click the "Save result to file" button.
  • Save the scan results to your desktop then come back here to copy and paste the results in your next reply to this thread.

STEP 3

F-Secure Blacklight

Please download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe) and save to your C:\ drive.
1. Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
2. Copy/paste or type the following in the command window:

C:\blbeta.exe /expert

3. Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
4. Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
5 Click "Scan".
6. After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit". BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
7. The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe".
8. Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Note: If you download Blacklight to your desktop, just double-click to run from there and it will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.

STEP 4

Report Back
  • Make sure you have followed all the instructions
  • Please post back the AVG Anti Rootkit Log
  • The F-Secure Blacklight Log
  • A fresh HijackThis Log

I will review the information and reply as soon as possible.
