Alright, so here's my problem.

I live in Wisconsin and have Charter as my ISP.
My friend lives in Maryland and has Comcast as his ISP.

We have recently been trying to connect to each other directly via the Gamespy networking service. Other players can connect to each of us directly and we can connect to other players directly, but we cannot establish a direct connection to each other.
I ran a traceroute to his IP address, and had him do the same to me. Here are the results:

Obviously, neither of us were able to discern a path to the other's computer. Both of the probes seem to be re-directed at some point along the path and ultimately dropped, but both of those points are within Comcast's network.

If anyone is willing to help me in anyway they can, I would deeply appreciate it.

Thank you,

Darkeye1

When I tried just now neither you nor your friend was replying to ping. Of course, you may have both been offline, but if you (and friend) have ping replies disabled then tracert is destined to eventually get time outs.

Alright, I enabled my router to respond to pings, and my friend tried to connect again, but this time, he was in a different house, on a different network, with a different ISP. He also enabled ping responses, yet we still cannot traceroute to each other.

Now, it seems like the problem is between my computer and my ISP, but I'm not exactly sure where...

Did you try just pinging each other's public IP since you now have reply to pings enabled on your routers?

Doing a trace route between you and your friend may not work as this requires all the routers between you and your friend to respond to ICMP requests.

We can both now ping each other, but neither can traceroute to the other, along with us still not being able to direct connect within the game. Although, if it is true and all the routers along the route do not respond to ICMP requests, like zx10guy said, will that be what's blocking our direct connection?

Other than that, it seems like the problem is within my application layer. Anymore ideas?

Thank you,

No. It just means that you cannot determine the exact route (see my tracert to you), but it doesn't block access.

You may now have a firewall problem or have not port forwarded properly.

Ignore the traceroutes. This will be a firewall/port forward issue. What modem, router (if applicable), and software firewalls do both you and your friend have?
