it seems just about every time I try to print an envelope in Word 97sr2 I can input the recipient address, press print and nothing happens. I then redo the entire process and put the data back and try again and it will print. I don't see the little print icon down on the bottom scroll bar in action so no what is going on.

I hate the envelopes feature in Word, and still hate it in Word 2003.

well today I tried printing a sheet of paper and the document required me pressing the print icon 2x to work. I see the little animation on the bottom toolbar but nothing happens the first time. I have my Epson 440 connected via the lpt port and I am using the Epson background monitor app as well.

Your printer isn't compatible with even Windows XP, much less Office 2003.

all I don't get by using the Epson drivers at worst is not being able to monitor ink levels. This is a communications issue.

Have you tried deleting and reinstalling your printer yet?
That would be step 1
