Printer Driver Problem? Vista Problem? Not Sure!

Printer: Epson Workforce 600 (scanner, copier, printer combo).
Computer HP Pavilion a6530f (nearly new), running Vista 64-bit, AMD Phenom 8450 Triple Core processor, 2.10 GHz, 4 Gigs of RAM.

Problem: Printer prints plenty fast once it starts printing but takes a l-o-o-o-ng time to start printing.

Everything else on this system runs fine, programs start and run at expected speeds, other printers are fast. This printer ran well for about 7 months until this problem started about two weeks ago.

Example: When printing a test page, it takes 42 seconds just to display the dialog box that says a page has been sent to the printer and a total of 87 seconds before it actually starts to print. This is typical of all documents, plain text as well.

I uninstalled the printer's software and drivers, went in and made sure all its folders were also deleted and then restarted the system and reinstalled the drivers without change in result. The USB cable has also been swapped.

I connected the printer to my laptop (which runs XP Pro), loaded its drivers and the problem did NOT present, so the problem is in the HP Pavilion a6530f.

Any suggestions?

Just for clarification, did you install the latest drivers that were available from the printer manufacturer's website?

Is your HP computer part of a domain or workgroup? Do run a printer server?

How is the printer configured to operate? Is it configured to spool? If so, is it set to print after last page is spooled? Is it set to print directly to the printer? Do you run anything that establishes printing priority or timeframe?

Open the Properties of your printer on the HP system, then click the Advanced tab. Which items are checked/selected? Which driver is selected?

Thanks for your response.

Removed old driver again, restarted computer, installed latest driver. No change.

No print server.

Yes, this computer is part of a workgroup but the printer, itself, is directly connected to a USB port on this computer, no domain. I have tried other USB ports and I have checked the USB port settings in the BIOS. I have tested the USB port's speed by copying large groups of small files and copying single large files and comparing that speed to my laptop. The time is about the same.

Spooling or not spooling makes no significant difference when printing this test page, 50 seconds for not spooling, 72 seconds for spooling. Printing immediately or printing after last page is spooled makes no difference.

As an additional note, everything in this printer's properties is slow to respond. Checking it tabs, advanced, etc. is always slow to respond to clicks and any changes while the same operations for the other printer is instantaneous. The other printer is a multi-function Ricoh Aficio 2020D, one of those big, stand-alone copiers that has its own wheels, stands belly high from the floor and takes a hande-truck to move.

Maybe the printer is going bad?

I have presented everything I can think of. Hopefully someone else can help. Keep the thread here for a while, then consider requesting to have it moved to the Hardware forum.
