Primary (internal) Battery (601) + System Restore Fails

I am not sure in which category this applies, so I apologize if this is not the correct location...

I am working on an HP G62 with a couple of issues.

First is that I keep getting a "Primary (internal) Battery (601)" message at boot up. I replaced the CR2032 CMOS battery - which tests good under load, by the way - and tried to run the battery calibration under System Diagnostics (which I didn't really think applied to the CMOS battery anyway, but HP says it does so...) but I still get the same message. I also cleaned the battery contacts with a fiberglass brush. When I did the battery calibration, it just hung. That was on AC, so I tried it on battery and the laptop died after a couple of minutes - leading me to believe that the SECONDARY (EXTERNAL) battery is the battery that is bad, despite the laptops insistence that it's the primary battery...

Second problem is that when I try to boot to windows "normally" it goes through the "starting windows" screen but then very QUICKLY flashes a blue screen and reboots. When I try to boot into the System Recovery software, it boots up to a blue-background screen with a mouse icon that I can move but the recovery software never loads, regardless of how long I let it set.

Any ideas on either issue would be ever so greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

I'm not familiar with laptops that have both primary and secondary batteries connected (with most laptops you need to physically replace the depleted battery with the spare). Why do you think that it is really the secondary battery? Wouldn't the error code be 602 instead of 601? If both batteries are the same you could switch them and see what happens.

Can you get into the BIOS and check to see if it is detecting the hard drive? If so, run any disk diagnostic that the BIOS may have.

The Primary Internal battery message is NOT connected with the RTC CMOS battery
the message relates to the laptop battery
You are correct battery calibration has nothing to do with the CR2032 battery
I am amazed that the HP person you spoke to does not apparently know what the messages mean

Differences between primary and secondary battery messages
  • If Primary (internal) Battery (601) appears in the alert message, it means the measured storage capacity of the primary (internal) battery is less than 25% of the original storage capacity. The number "601" denotes the associated error code that is recorded in the system log.
  • If Secondary (external) Battery (602) appears in the alert message, it means the measured storage capacity of the secondary (external) battery is less than 25% of the original storage capacity. The number "602" denotes the associated error code that is recorded in the system log.
Internal is the main battery despite it not actually being internally fitted the HP report separates it from a secondary if such is fitted
Secondary external is not applicable to your G62 but an example is here

I am not surprised
. The "internal" threw me
but I am surprised that it also apparently -confused the HP person
and even more so that they apparently thought a RTC 3v - non chargeable battery could be calibrated

The first task is to disconnect the laptop battery, as a defective battery can cause all manner of problems
Whether it transpires to be the battery itself or the charging circuit for the battery remains to be seen
I am sure there is no confusion - but just in case I refer to the main battery NOT of course the aforementioned CMOS battery

In respect of the blue screen as a first step and indeed as mentioned by my good colleague TerryNet check BIOS settings for boot device and indeed date and time settings after your replacement of the RTC battery

If date and time are correct and BIOS settings appear in order - boot F8 Safe Mode and report result please

Under Safe Mode... it gets to "Loading ... CLASSPNP.SYS" and then it reboots every time. I left System Restore running all night last night just to see what would happen and it actually get to a screen where it was trying to do something, but the bar just kept scanning back and forth.

1. have you entered BIOS and checked time and date
I am sure we will solve it, but please when you reply, confirm all requested actions, this saves any doubt in my mind that you may have missed one
Please do not use system restore while we are working together, as that will then go back to how it was before I suggest any possible fix in the forthcoming posts

2. Go F8 again repair your computer and then if you have cmd prompt go for that and post back and we will then start work

3. Does the Blue screen have a message on it or is it simply a blank blue screen

4. Did the problem of the blue screen and classpnp already exist before the battery replacement or has it only occurred since
I think the RTC battery is next to the ram sticks on that G62, is there ANY chance a ram stick is not correctly clipped in place

I'm sorry. Yeah, I did set the date and time in the BIOS. After it rebooted at the classpnp line, I let it reboot to the System Restore option (which was default) and just let it sit. After a couple of hours, it started doing the "looking for problems" thing and said that it was attempting to repair the drive. Well, after an hour or so of that, it rebooted itself and is working fine now! I can't find any thing wrong or anything that could have caused it, but....

I suspect as a possibility a failing hard drive
which is what we were going to address on point 2 on my previous post

Go windows button type in search
cmd
when it appears above as command prompt
right click and click run as admin
when the cmd window opens it should be headed
administrator command prompt and NOT
just Command Prompt
type at the C prompt
chkdsk /r

presuming C is where windows is installed
press enter
agree to run on restart
If you get any other message please post
restart
come back when chkdsk has completed please and computer rebooted
