Does anyone know where I can get a power supply that will work in an HP?
The ones I have found are very expensive, and HP in all their wisdom installed a 200 watt power supply in their 725n.
Will any power supply work? I have been confused about this issue. I get yes, you can use standard and no, you will fry your board. The board is an asus an78x-la which is the an78x with an HP bios.
Any suggestions?

Any powersupply should work fine, the trouble is getting one that will fight into the chasis - I'm not sure how HP's case architecture is.

Can you open up the case and look at the label on the side of the power supply that's installed now?

That might give us a clue as to what type you need.
ATX, ITX, etc..

Word of warning...

Spend the money on a quality powersupply.

Cheap powersupplies and cheap memory have caused some of the most annoying and toughest to diagnose problems I have ever tried to fix.

This doesn't tell me ANYTHING about the supply but here goes.
ac input 47-63 hz 100-127v-/6 amps
200-240v-/3 amps
dc output +5=/23a +12=/10a
+3.3=/10a +5vsb=/2a
+5 & +3.3 shall not exceed 148w
+5 & +12 shall not exceed 163w
max output power 200w

This as I said doesn't tell me a thing. It doesn't say ATX or anything on it. That is one of the problems I have had looking for the supply. Just HP BS I guess. The only other label is a warning label in about 5 languages.

Look at the Plug to the mother board. is it a standard 20pin atx plug? if so you will probably be able to use just about any PSU that will go into the box.

Probably but not definately. I know for a fact that dell and compaq both have boxes that use the standard connecter with non-standard pinouts.

This can also be true. My experience with Compaq is that they used a *******ized micro-atx mobo that actually had at power supply connections on it. and now that HP and Compaq are the same company it may be they have totally wierded out on us!

Ohhhh-K, now. If I were to buy the standard ATX and the wire colors were different would it be possible to cut the plug from the old supply and match the colors?
This is almost getting scary here, making me a little nervous.
I can solder, but twenty connections. Whew. Wire nuts would work but you would have a freaking mess.
This is a powerful machine other than this one issue. I have added 2 fans and an agp video card, no problems yet but I am looking for it to happen.
Let me google and see if I can find a picture of a regular atx connector so I can compare what I have.

OK, after some research here there are a couple of wires that don't match up.
If I were to take the wires that are different, say orange and red and switch them to what my HP plug puts out I would have to change 4 wires if you understand what I am saying.
I would have to cut orange and red and switch them BEFORE the plug. I know orange is 3v red is 5v and yellow is 12v so what I would be doing is putting the right voltages before the supply plugs into the board. Think it will work or fizzle? I think it should work, but I am not a builder or even much of a hardware guy. I can add and replace parts and check voltages.

as long as the correct voltge is going to the correct pin, you will be fine. Just make sure you check the voltages, not just the color. It's not hard to imagine them merely changing the color coding not the pin out also.

Hokay, thanks folks. Going to buy. I probably won't attempt it till the weekend when I have time to fully check each and every pin and map it out correctly. The way it looks, and I won't be sure until I get the new supply is 4 wires will need changed. If that is all I come up with I'll solder the connections and use shrink tubing to insulate them.
