I have just bought a PcChips M810LMR motherboard and an AMD Duron 1.6 Ghz and putting it into a Compaq Presario 5000 case using the original power supply. When i turn the power on the fan on the power supply turns about a half turn and then stops and wont do anything else untill i unplug the power connector from the mobo and plug it back in then i get another half turn out of it. I thought that it might be a bad power supply so i tried another one but i get the same from it. Have I lucked upon two faulty power supplys or is it possibly a bad mobo? Or is there something else that im just overlooking. Any help will be greatly appreciated. :(

First of all you cannot install a standard atx board into a compaq case. Compaq uses proprietary parts; that is they are not standard.

Pull the board out of the case and try for a post outside of the case. If it powers up and posts, you have your answer.

FWIW pcchips is about the worst of the motherboard makers.

You probably have a dead board; not uncommon with pcchips. Have you tried your cpu and memory in the other board?
I would really go with another mfg for the board. Socket A boards are getting very hard to find at the moment because it is outdated tech. There are a few on newegg.

I tried the memeory and processor with both power supplys on another board and they worked fine. I was looking at newegg earlier and found an MSI board which is the same as in my current rig which has been doing good so far. I do appreciate the help, I thought it might be the board but wasnt sure, just wanted to make sure that I wasnt overlooking something. Again I appreciate the help.

Rich may have something there. I checked the pcchips site and there are about 7 different versions of that board. There are bios updates to support the duron 1.6 chip. You may have a board that does not support that cpu.
