popping sound in audio playback

I have a creative sound blaster live sound card, using win xp pro. When I'm listening to headphones I don't hear the popping sound, but listening over the speakers I hear it even with the volume turned down low. Is there a setting I could adjust? I fixed this once before but can't remember what I did to fix this problem. I would surely appreciate your help.
