Hi everyone, hope this is a good year for all. I just picked up a new computer running xp. It came without a floppy drive, so I picked up a portable external usb floppy drive. Is it ok to plug in, and unplug the floppy to the usb port with the computer on? Thanks for the tips/advice.

In the System Tray there is an arrow icon pointing at a 45 degree downward angle. Left click on this before you want to disconnect a USB device. Then click the device in the 'menu.' Wait for the message 'OK to remove.'

Hello IMP49,

If you want to get rid of this process, while plugin and plugout everytime.

you will need to apply this setting at once....

from windows explorer select the drive and right click on it....

then goto Properties>Hardware[select the drive]>Properties>Policies>

click on... "Optimize for quick removal" or select according to your need.

If you use the "Safely Remove Hardware" tray icon, you don't need the "Optimize for quick removal" setting.

Thanks to all who replied to my thread, I think I got it, plugging in no problem if the computer is turned on , unplugging use caution, use the unplug or eject hardware icon in the system tray, or make sure the item is off/not running when unplugged. Thanks again for all who took time to inform me, much appreciated.
