Hi! I think "plug and play" is no longer working on my computer. I tried installing both a USB flash drive and an external CD recorder that are both supposed to be plug and play. Instead, the found new hardware wizard comes up and I can't go any further since these items did not come with any drivers to install. My first question: is it possible that Plug and Play was somehow turned off? Is there a way to put it back on? I am using a 1 year old Toshiba with WinXP SP2. Please help! Thanks!:(

For starters, check

start/control panel/administrative tools/component services/services (local)(rt pane)

check that 'Plug and Play', and 'Universal Plug and Play', are both enabled, from the list.

Thanks so much for trying to help. 'Plug and Play' was shown as automatic, while Universal Plug and Play' was shown as manual. I changed it to automatic (was this OK?), rebooted and tried the USB flash drive. Once again, the 'Found new hardware wizard' comes up, and the drive does NOT install. What could be the problem? Any other ideas? Thank you again.
