pcmica cdrom: no access

9412 Views 85 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  CarlosF
Hello All,

I am working on an old laptop. It's a Dell Latitude XPi. The external cdrom (connected via pcmica slot) is a "Slim" drive model number CD224. The dell has no Operating system on it except for basic system files to get to a command prompt. We want to put Windows 98 on it but I don't know how to get the Laptop to see the drive. I have tried boot disks with CD drivers on them but they don't work since it's connected thru the PCMICA slot.

What do I do??!!

Thank you,

John

Howdy folks...

JohnJ...

Can you take out the PCMCIA card and see if it is a USB card, the CD224 appears to be a Teac USB external drive...

Also post the model and manufacture of the PCMCIA card...
Hmmm...

The model doesn't show any hits with Google...

Is there a mention of a manufacture ?

Also the only hit of a manufacture using PCMICA to ATA/ATAPI Adapter for the search I gould get with Google was Shining Technology...

Their drivers are here...

http://www.shining.com/download.html
Is there anything other than this on the PCMCIA card ?

The PCMICA card says the following:
PCMICA to ATA/ATAPI Adapter
Model No: EIDE2000
SN#: A6104257

Maybe a FCC ID, or anything ( check both sides ) ?
It really depends on the PCMCIA card, still looking for that logo...
You are most correct carlos...

However, in order to get the correct drivers, we'll need to know the manufacture of the PCMCIA card...

Try this direct download...

http://baber.com/support/drivers/pcmcia_blue.exe

I don't know ifthese are the right ones or not, just one that matched...

What you will need to do if reinstalling the OS is to format the c: like this format c /s , once it is formatted boot to the c: and unzip the files to a floppy, and use the floppy to install the PCMCIA drivers...

If these don't work we'll try to find more...

Howdy Dabblingpond...

If I'm not mistaken these have no Operating System on them ;)...

Thank you Jedi Master:

A few years back I took the course on Computar Tech, I have never sat for the A+ Certification exam. I can put a computer together etc. But I am pretty bad in trouble shooting and a lot of the Operating Sytem Dos and procedure.

I did not get to have a lot of on hand experience. And the problem is that "If you don't use the skills you learn right away, you loose them". So right now I feel like a Quack.......................... but I am presitent.

And when I get in trouble like this I just keep fireing away. Because I know that the system was operational when I blew all of the partitions. I just forgot to back up all of the programs I needed to put back when I started again. I thought the bootable disk would do it and for a week I most have downloaded 5 diferent kinds of bootable disk. And at the same times picked up a few Geeky books from the library. So I have been doing this step by step, and once in a while skiping or missing a few steps.

Thank you for the information you have provided. I will keep telling you what I have been doing and when I find new good material I will post it.

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU.
Don't worry about it, I'm not that good with pc's either :) , I keep calling for help almost every day :)...

Yep keep us posted, and good luck...

And the FORCE will be with you always :D...
That's odd...

I downloaded it and unzipped it, and it is only 1.12m, a standard floppy is 1.44m...

Make sure you have a good floppy disk...

Don't know...I just copied the contents onto a floppy and it fit...

Check the floppies, and the drive ( or try and copy it from a different pc )...
Howdy folks...

IMHO...no offense but the Banana driver isn't going to work for the PCMCIA CD-ROM...

You will need to format the c: with the system files on it, then install the PCMCIA drivers to the c...

Hmmm...looks like you don't have the right drivers, or software for the PCMCIA card...

As a test, can you type in d: at the c: prompt and access the CD-ROM drive ?
