PCMCIA NIC on Xitronix 6250

I recently purchased a used Xitronix 6250 X-Country ruggedized laptop to use in my garage with OBDII software via the serial port. Works fine for that. The laptop has no floppy or CD and came with Win95 installed, CABs on the HD, plus a bunch of software that Sprint used for it's techs (this is a former Sprint laptop with a radio modem built in), P200, 48MB, 2GB.

I decided to install a DLink DWL650 PCMCIA card for ethernet since I can only load things using the built-in modem. I downloaded the driver from DLink and the install seemed to go fine, the card is seen in the PCMCIA control panel, but it is disabled in the device manager. I removed a bunch of other stuff that was installed, like a PCMCIA floppy I didn't have, removable drives etc etc. I changed some conflicting resource settings. I tried reinstalling card services. I dug up an old Xircom 10/28.8 combo card to see if the DWL650 was too new, same result.

Any ideas?

I'm thinking of upgrading to Win98 Lite by removing the drive and putting it into a USB case I have, but I'm concerned about proprietary drivers, the laptop mfr has little support outside of it's pay system.
