My son's pc has just started to act up yesterday. He has WinXP PRO and when he shuts it down, it goes through the usual windows logging off and windows shutting down screen and it actually sounds like it's shutting down. The fans stop working and the monitor even goes black but a split second later, it boots up again.

I already tried to restore to a point that I know that it didn't do this but that didn't work.

Any ideas? TIA.

He may have changed the settings to power on with modem activity or network activity which "might" cause this if he's connected by hi speed cable.

Wake on LAN and the like should be set to OFF or disabled.

One question. Is this a hardware problem or is it a windows problem? If it's a windows problem, I can always reformat the HD and load windows again. Or maybe just do a windows repair if that will work.

Any more ideas. Thanks.

It may be rebooting on error as well. Go to control panel / system / advanced / startup & Recovery /
Uncheck the option to auto restart then apply it and try shutting down.
