My computer switches on (as in switched off - not on standby) when the phone rings.
I have been to the modem settings and all is correct there.
I have been into bios to disable the modem wake part (and saved it) but the thing still clicks into life when the phone rings.
Virus checker is bang up to date....
Please help.

You might want to check your other wake-on settings in your bios. Sometimes there can be quite a few things that will set it off
