Basically, my PC gets real slow, almost unusable, when I have a certain program running. It annoys the heck out of me and most of the time I reboot but that doesn't always make my PC faster. Sometimes my pc freezes and i'll have to reboot once again. Does anyone know what's slowing my system down and how to fix my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How much RAM do you have?

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

Any help on speeding up my startup will be greatly appreciated.

I'm running Windows XP Professional, 1.68GHZ 1.0GB of RAM
I'll start by pointing out that you should never use more than one antivirus program. You have two, Avast and Avira. They will conflict and render your computer more vulnerable. They will also surely slow down your computer quite a bit. Please uninstall one.

Also, find the Ask toolbar (full of adware) uninstaller and remove it. You may not find it because a lot of files are missing. Try the free Revo Uninstaller.

Do you have an olympus camera? OLYMPUS Master is set to run at startup. If you don't have your camera anymore you can uninstall OLYMPUS Master.

Did you try to uninstall the Ask toolbar like Phantom010 said to do? The missing files are still showing up in the log.

Glad your computer is running good again.

As for the Ask toolbar, the uninstall wasn't thorough at all. You still have traces of it. If you'd like all traces of it removed, please click on the Report button to ask a malware removal expert to help you clean your computer. You might have even more malware on your computer, since you have been using file sharing applications...

Download OTS.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTS on your desktop.
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTS, allow it to run.
  3. Open the OTS folder and double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  4. In Additional Scans section put a check in Disabled MS Config Items and EventViewer logs
  5. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  6. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  7. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  8. Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

NOTE: The only people who can see attachments in the HJT forum are: the thread starter, Admins & Mods, and HJT Helpers & Trainees.

Please run ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use IE or FireFox for this scan. You need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus. If you need help with that look here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go ESET Online Scanner and click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on Start
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on Start
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on Finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!
