Hi I am using Windows ME and I was wondering if anyone knows how to make it so no one can access my computer without a password. When I start up the computer I would like to be briefed with a password screen. If I fail to to enter a correct password the computer will not allow access. There will be no way to access anything without a proper password. Can anyone help me? Thank you.

Fortify:

Here's how>

Start /Settings / Control Panel.
Click on 'Passwords'
In 'Password Properties', click 'Change Windows Password' , click OK, , , Type in your password

You can also set a 'screensaver password',
that is activated with your screen saver if you leave your system,

Here's how to set it:
Go to Control Panel / Display
Click the Screen Saver tab,
Select the 'Password protected' box, click the 'Change' tab,
Type your password, and adjust the time of the screensaver to your routine,

You can also protect your files and folders independently by using a compression program, like Winzip or your personal zip program, which will further let you 'password encrypt' that file,
:)

You are wanting to set a bios password. Press F2 or what ever is required by your bios, sometimes it's the del key. If you give your bios we can offer more assistance in getting there. Then you want to go into the Security or Admin settings.

That's not fool proof though, just a deterrent. Like putting locks on your doors and windows. If someone really want in, they will get in.

Welcome to TSG!

WinME as with all the Win9x operating systems were not designed to prevent access as you wish it to be. The only possible way to totally prevent access except by password is to create a supervisor password within the BIOS of the system. The only draw back to that is if you forget the password no one can get into the system without knowing some unique methods entailing the motherboard.
If you wish to incorporate a BIOS password then I would suggest you record it and place it in a safe place in case you forget.

Let me know if you wish to do this and I will tell you how.

Thank you for the welcome, and thank you everyone for your replies. I think I would like to try the BIOS approach. However I am going to have to plead complete ignorance on this subject. If you still want to show me the steps, that would be greatly appreciated.

Accessing the Bios is done when system is first started or at first stages of restart. Somewhere on the original post screen will some text that states something to the affect of:
"Enter setup Press XX"
"Enter BIOS Press XX"
or something like that.

You may miss your opportunity the first time around since you are searching for the entry key so just restart system and press the proper key at post.

Once into BIOS the usual navigation is arrow keys left right to scroll across the top and down arrow to move down within catagory.

Once you locate the line item indicating Supervisor Password arrow to highlight and then hit the enter key.

Once password is set-up hit the escape key and use right arrow to scroll to exit. Once to exit hit enter and say yes to save.
System may start with supervisor password one time but the next start it will be required.

Hope that helps

Dave

Okay, I restarted my computer after reading your post. I assume I am looking for some dos text at startup, the only problem I do not see anything, the computer seems to go directly to windows mode. If you have any idea what to do, please let me know. Thank you for your reply.
