Hi,
My sister in law is running Zone Alarm and has noticed that P2P seems to be trying to get away. When she looks at her logfile it is trying to access the internet (different IP numbers) all the time. She has blocked it and everything seems to be working ok. Here is her latest email to me...

I found this interesting, but what do I know. Thought I would run it by you.
>I started our computer this morning and went straight to my Zone Alarm log. Didn't go to home page or anything.
>I had 14 items from P2P Networking. All the time I started the computer.
>9 different Destination IP:
>These first 4 have a Port 3531
>38.114.5.168
>217.212.240.10
>80.160.91
>80.160.91.2
>
>These had no Port
>202.232.163.31
>202.139.23.153
>130.244.33.193
>12.160.140.10
>204.152.19.175
>
>I updated and ran Adaware again found tracking cookies.
>Ran Spy bot again, nothing found.
>Ran AVG no viruses found.

Can anybody give me any ideas what this is?
Zone Alarm says it's a program trying to access... but it just lists the program as P2P Networking and we don't know of any reason it should be going out.

Thanks for looking

You have probably downloaded some kind of virus/trojan/spyware that is trying to "phone home".

Try running your anti virus software first.
Then SpyBot Search & Destroy http://tomcoyote.com/SPYBOT/index1.php
Then AdAware6 http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

Be sure to read and follow the directions about up-dating and how to run them. They are both likely to find quite a bit. Even if they don't solve the immediate problem, this will be helpful.
Post back and we can get deeper if the problem is still there.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe

I'd say that's what is causing the issue, but its quite possible there's other things on there. so lets see what our networking experts say if there's anything else.

These two needs to be removed:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART

O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} (Web P2P Installer) -

You will need to manually need to delete the file too (P2P networking.exe file)

If you had Kazaa on the machine you will need to remove it completly

she isn't running any peer to peer stuff herself, it's just popping up by itself.
she updated and reran spybot per longhair's recommendation and found xupiter uninstaller as well as powerscan and wild tangent.
these are all things we've dealt with before on this machine...(i think this is round FOUR!) she had spybot take care of them then posted a new HJT log.
(DaiseyDuke)
her boys play games at yahoo...that is the only way i can think of that they'd keep running into this stuff. any ideas?

thanks for any help!

It wouldn't be from Yahoo. It could be that her boys is using a P2P program, not necessary Kazaa, but it could be why it's popping up. If you run HJT and remove the two listings I put up, it should be fine again

I'm looking in per your PM request Liber8ed1

As has aready been pointed out this is the only thing bad in the log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART

This is a remnant of Kazaa.

Fix that and boot to safe mode and delete:

The C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking folder

Thanks everybody for helping!!
I think we got most of it taken care of now.
I will have to go over sometime this week and boot to safe mode to remove that last file...

do you think it wil reinstall everything from that last piece?
(The C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking folder)
or will it be ok to leave that for a few days?

sometimes i think i need to set up pcanywhere or something.

do any of you guys post on the random side?
if so where?

You're Welcome.

If you didn't delete the p2p networking folder you may have to fix this HJT entry again:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART
