Hi,

i have windows XP and outlook 2003,

i've just started to get lots of symantec popups scanning emails, i get so many (100 in 40secs) none of which i sent, i cant do much else apart from disable the internet to stop it. Norton antivirus hasn't detected anything, nor has ad-aware pro. Im not sure if it is only when i open outlook or just 5 minutes after being on the internet, however it hasnt happened whilst writing this and outlook isnt open.

outlook has two email inboxes, one hotmail and another uni email.

please could you help me, is this a virus trying to spam people from my computer, how can i detect it?

any help would be much appreciated! ....please help!

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi,

i have done as you have said, although the link didnt work, so i found another thread with a tomcoyote link to hijackthis, from here i got a zip file, i extracted the zip as it automatically saved itself to program files. is this properly extracxted if it is there in program files? because i read in the other thread that if it is not it will not backup automatically? ...sorry this is all pretty new to me.

Indeed the site I gave you is down but I'm happy you found another source for the download and yes it is in a proper location.

Your log does not look too bad but you have *things* running from your temp folder
C:\DOCUME~1\******\LOCALS~1\Temp
that need addressing.

Since I'm not seeing anything related to your original comments in the scan my thought is your anti-virus is attempting to clean or remove e-mail(s) you may have saved in folders (pst files) on your hard drive.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Now close hijackthis.

You may want to print the following instructions to use while in safe mode.

Restart in Safe Mode.

• To boot up in Safe mode, continuously tap the F8 key while starting your computer.
• You should see a black screen displaying the Windows Advanced Menu Options.
• Using your keyboard's arrow keys, select Safe mode, then hit Enter.

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab. Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Now click "Apply to all folders" Click "Apply" then "OK".

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\****** (Repeat for all user names)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Now restart in normal mode and post your log again.

Thanks for your help and advice!

i have done as you have said above, i deleted the one things you said to in hjt and although i couldnt get into safe mode because after f8 it went to a different screen other than the safe mode selection, i managed to find a way to do it using msconfig. I then deleted the contents of the temp folders for all users.

when you say 'things' in the temp folder, what exactly were they? are they likely to return?

i just looked through the log and it looks like the one thing to delete in hjt has gone,

but you also mentioned about things in the temp folder, the only things i can see in the first log are the below...

however after doing the safe mode and deleting of the temp folders, they are still in the latest log2.

should they not be gone?

To be even safer, try booting to safe mode and delete everything in that temp directory. It is not uncommon for spyware to remain there and get copied and then renamed to the executable if you manually delete just the executable.

Hi,

thanks for your advice, yes that is what i did, i went into safe mode and deleted all contents in the temp folder for each user. All Temp fodlers are now empty with the exception of a couple of items which are CE67013C.TMP and LVCOMSX. the latter i believe is for my logitech webcam, so i think both are fine. so not sure about those 3 exe files in my previous post.

Might double check for hidden files as well. Could also simply be left-over entries that simply point to files that are no longer there.

there arent any hidden files, i made them all show up before i went into the safe mode to do it, i think what is there now is fine. I'm just worried about the 3 still in the log that cybertech was talkin about, and also my original problem of where the mass emails originating on my computer are coming from.

Again, if they are not there, then nothing runs. Just left overs entries to run a file that isn't there.

Rather than trying to manually figure each one out, which doesn't always work, have you tried any of the many programs available to remove spyware automatically?

Spybot, Defender from Microsoft, and Ad-Aware are three good ones to start with.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 AVG ANTI-SPYWARE IS ONLY FOR SYSTEMS RUNNING WIN 2K and XP
(This is Ewdio 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to this version which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware)
1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
7. Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
8. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc

• Press "OK".
• Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
• When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
• In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
• From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
• Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.

9. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update succesfull message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.

• Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
• Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
• Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
• Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
• Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".

2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?

5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report in your next response.

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

Note: If AVG Anti-Spyware "crashes" or "hangs" during the scan, try scanning again by doing this:
1. Scan one sector of the system at a time by using the "Custom Scan" feature. To do this select Scanner > Custom Scan and click on Add drive/directory/file. Browse to C:\Windows > System, add this folder to the list and click on "Start Scan". When the scan is complete, repeat the Custom Scan but this time, browse to and add the System32 folder. Then keep repeating this procedure until all your folders have been scanned. Make sure you include the Documents & Settings folder.

2. If this still does not help, then turn the ADS scanner off while making a Custom Scan. To do this select Scanner > Scan Settings and untick "Scan in NTFS Alternate Data Streams". Then repeat the steps above for performing a Custom Scan.
