I am new so please bear with me;
My Outlook 2002 has recently had some problems, and repeated contact with Earthlink support has failed to resolve them. I receive the following error messages; Sending and receiving reported error (0x80042108): 'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) email server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or internet server provider (ISP). Earthlink has assured me repeatedly that all of my "settings" are correct!

Another strange message (different email account) ;Sending and receiving reported error (8x080070279) : The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly.

The tech people at Earthlink advised me that "Your Outlook program has been corrupted, and I should take the computer to a technician to have this issue resolved".

I am running Windows XP

Please help me if you can, andy

Try going to a secure HTTP site. anything with HTTPS:// in the beginning of it. if this fails and you get an unable to resolve error you will know its not just your Outlook but actually a security problem with XP. I had to system restore a clients PC back 2 months prior just to get it working again. They had the exact same unable to connect error message when trying to check emails but I didn't connect them until she told me her online banking no longer worked and stopped at the same time outlook stopped working.

My online banking seems to work fine.

Are you running any type of antivirus? have you tried DLing with the antivirus turned off? Maybe its causing it to stop the connection to the mail server?
I have actually removed Norton thinking it was the problem. One odd thing I did notice today, is that it will send/receive when the computer is started (after being off all day) and I initially open outlook. After that inital session it will refuse to function properly as outlined earlier. WIERD>
