I just received an Olympus SP-500UZ as an early Christmas gift from my father. So far so good but I don't have a lot of experience with digital cameras, let alone this specific one. Anyone familiar with it or have any suggestions?

The first thought that comes to mind is... read the manual from front to back

... after that go take a few pictures and make note of the settings and results... make adjustments accordingly

That camera has a huge zoom range---on the high end you will have to set your shutter speed pretty high (requiring more light and/or a higher film speed). Generally it is thought well of and you should enjoy it. I always suggest that people read the manual (already suggested) and learn the relationship between aperature, shutter speed and film speed. There are some good websites out there to get you going.
