Old lady--found porn sites in Registry!

On a PCWorld recommendation, I tried out SpyBloc, and it claimed to have found CWS on my PC, so I downloaded the latest version of CWShredder, and it didn't find CWS on my computer. Then I followed the registry path given for the CWS infection in SpyBloc and did find the file mentioned, xxxtoolbar.com. The full path was HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\
internetsettings\zonemap\domains\xxxtoolbar.com

I did indeed find xxxtoolbar.com under domains, but what concerns me even more is that I found a multitude of other listings there, with names containing things like "sexlinks," "sexparty," "lottery," adultlink," "coolfetishsite," and so on. My husband and I are in our late sixties and--just in case anyone thinks he might be secretly using my PC to view porn--he has his own computer, and I am sure he would not be viewing porn, anyway. No one else has access to our computers, and I have never even inadvertently, so far as I can remember, visited a porn site. My computer is a Dell Dimension 8200, running WinXP Home, bought new from Dell, so it has not had any previous owners, either.


My main question is, can I just delete these porn references from the registry? What would happen if I even deleted everything under "domains"? I am running Norton Antivirus and Norton Firewall and I am not seeing porn popups or being diverted to porn sites or anything, but I absolutely hate the idea that these things are in my registry. How do they get there, anyway?

Other questions:
1. Is xxxtoolbar.com really related to CWS?
2. So, is CWS not doing its job, or is SpyBloc lying about what it finds in order to get customers?
3. SpyBloc also found EasyWWW--in C:\windows\bootstat.dat, where I found that it has the icon that tells you that you have to tell the computer what program to open it under. I understand that EasyWWW uses I.E., but I am using Firefox, so does it matter if--big IF--my computer is infected with that adware?

I will be very grateful to anyone who can help with these questions, and I am off now to make a contribution, because I love this site for rescuing me so many times.

All those entris in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\
internetsettings\zonemap\domains are entries put there to block those sites on your computer. They were put there by one of your other programs like Spybot's Immunization or SpywareBlaster or the like. It is a false positive by SpyBlocs.

First of all, if it's Spy-Block or SpyBlocs, then it is a rogue program. You can read about it here:

As for those entries found in the registry, navigate to them and click on the folder. In the right pane you will see a DWORD and to the right of that you will see a number. If that number ends in 4 and (4), then those entries are in the restricted zone and have been placed there by an anti-spyware program, so that they cannot be accessed from your computer and these are good entries. You don't want to delete them.

On the other hand, if they have a number ending in 2 (2), then they have been placed in the trusted zone and some malware can do that without you knowing. I'm confident in your case that it is the first scenario though.

If you'd like to post a Hijack This log for verification, please do so.

Click here to download HijackThis.

Close all open windows and open HijackThis. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished, the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to Notepad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed.

Thank you both. I am angry about SpyBloc's lies and am going to notify PCWorld. I am also greatly relieved because there is indeed a (4) for those entries. Other things have gone strangely wrong at times, so I decided to take advantage of Cookiegal's kind offer and will post the Hijack here in about 1/2 hour.

Rescan with HijackThis, close all browser windows except HijackThis, put a check mark beside these entries and click “fix checked.”

Click here to download AboutBuster created by Rubber Ducky.

Unzip AboutBuster to the Desktop then click the Update Button then click Check for Update and download the updates and then click Exit because I don't want you to run it yet. Just get the updates so it is ready to run later in safe mode.

Restart to safe mode now:

How to boot to safe mode

Next run AboutBuster. Double click Aboutbuster.exe, click OK, click Start then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them.

I also suggest you download and run the following programs.

AD-AWARE

Go here and download Ad-Aware SE.

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From the main window, click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next, deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to perform a scan, click the Next button.

When the scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. To do so, right-click in the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next)

Restart your computer.

SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY

Go here and download Spybot Search & Destroy.

Install the program and launch it.

Before scanning press Online and Search for Updates .

Put a check mark at and install all updates.

Click Check for Problems and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds marked in RED.

Restart your computer.

I also recommend downloading SPYWAREBLASTER & SPYWAREGUARD for added protection.

Thanks for the very thorough and easy-to-follow directions. I have finished using AboutBuster, which I had never heard of before, but will keep for future use, and have downloaded the newest version of AdAware, but now I have to go to work. I will post again this evening. AboutBuster only found something with a name like "Re~ved Stream!" (Can't read my own writing!), whose path was C:\WINDOWS\Thumbs.db:encryptable.

I have run AdAware and updated my SpyBot program and run that, and there appear to be no more problems. Just in case, I have also downloaded Spywareguard (Didn't know about this one, either), as you suggested. Thanks so much for all the help. It felt great when SpyBot 'congratulated' me because it hadn't found any problems.

You're welcome.

Now you should turn system restore off to flush out all previous system restore points, then turn it back on and create a new restore point:

To turn off system restore, on the Desktop, right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a new restore point, click on Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools and then select System Restore.

In the System Restore wizard, select Create a restore point and click the Next button.

Type a name for your new restore point then click on Create.

Read here for info on how to tighten your security.

Delete your temporary files:

In safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit - Select All then Edit - Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start - Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit - Select All then Edit - Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel - Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the recycle bin.

(1)what difference there is in emptying %temp% in safe mode and doing it in regulare mode? I have done the latter once or twice, but is that less effective for some reason?

(2) There was a file in there connected to Roxio, whose program I use for burning CDs, a file named "DiskCopier." I got a message that this was a system file, so I chose not to delete it. Should I have?

(3) Another (read only) file I got a message about, asking if I really wanted to delete it, was named "ExtendedDLLS setup."
Can I always delete all files in temp., including ones like these?

Yes, it would be more effective in safe mode as some temp files will be running in normal mode and will not delete.

Can you give me the entire path to that file in question please. A Roxio file would not be a system file so I'd like to take a closer look at that.

Any files with the file extension .tmp can be deleted.
