Hi all,
I sure hope someone can help me on this. I can't for the life of me find anything on the web for a cure, ....or even a mention for that matter. Am I the only person who has ever had this problem??
When I send an email with an attachment in OE6, the poor victim receives up to 25 of the same message. Email without any attachments seem to send normally.
This may or may not be connected: After being on IE 6 for about 45 minutes, IE stops responding. I have to back out and restart the computer in order to go back online for another 45 or so minutes.
It sounds like a virus, but I have run Mcafee as well as another virus check online, ...does not show a virus. I have run Spybot and Ad-aware and deleted all the little cruddies they found, but I still have the problem.
Anyone have an idea what could be causing this?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
These are the basics of my system:
Win 98 second edition, Intel Celeron processor, 188 mg ram.

We'll look for "security" issues, and I will move the thread to that forum. Please continue to respond here. Do not open new threads for "replies"

Create a new, permanent folder for HijackThis and save the file to that. Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

Direct HijackThis download link: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

Can you open "new" windows in IE normally, or is this only a problem after being online for awhile?

I don't see any malware in the scanlog.

On the email issue, are more than one recpient having this problem with attachments you send? If it is just one, the problem may be on their end, eg:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=245620

One thing that might affect the issues with IE after being online for a period of time is resource depletion. You should empty the the temporary internet cache, offline content and history.

And you should try trimming that startup list as much as possible. Many of those startups can be disabled without any real loss of functionality.

antivirus and firewall programs should be left enabled.

Many others could be disabled by removing the checks for them in the system configuration utility (run msconfig and select the startup tab)

Review the "exes" you see there using the information on these sites and decide which you absolutely need to keep. You can always change your mind and re-check them.

http://computercops.biz/modules.php?name=StartupList
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

For example, loadqm, zone alarm's minilog, some of the HP and Lexmark, logitech, Kodak and Realplayer startups can be disabled or started manually when needed.

Hi Rollin' Rog,
Well.... I disabled some of the startup items, and guess I got a bit carried away. I did have to enable a few of them again... (I couldn't sign on to the web). :)
The same thing is still happening with the email and IE. Any other suggestions?
Thanks so much for your help,
eesoper

It doesn't appear to be a "Security" issue. I'll move this to "Web and Email" and see if we get any further help there.

I don't use OE personally so I'm not the best of help if it is a configuration issue there.

One possiblity for the lack of response after 45 minutes could be overheating, but usually this results in a total freeze, slow down or even shutdown.

Folks do need to make sure the vents are clear of dust and the fan is working from time to time. This requires shutting down and opening the case. Then testing the fan. Blow out any accumulated dust with a can of compressed air.
