Does it read CDs or DVDs with data already on them ok?

How old is the drive? Is it still under warranty?

Clicking noises from any kind of drive is usually a bad sign. (Impending death.)

A clicking noise is the DVD drive trying to read the disc multiple times and failing to do so. It does not always indicate impending failure. You might try a different brand of CD disc and see if that works. DVD drives will usually read all kinds of CD's, though. If the DVD drive is unable to read data from any type of CD or DVD disc, then it is probably malfunctioning.

**** dude do you know how expensive they are...i don't have that kinda cash
If its broke what would you like us to do about it, try the lens cleaner idea, if your really lucky that may be all it is. Stuff does break down you know, people with no money should probably not have expensive toys. But you know how this stuff goes, I paid $350 us for a cd-rw when they first came out, now their giving them away in cereal boxes.

Looking around the net, they look like about $80 for a cheap one. Your right they are still a chunk'o'change. If you can scape together the money, next time i would try to get a good brand like Plextor or something similar. With a good warantee, the cdrw i was tlking about ($350) is still runnning fine, slower than crap , but still running, that was a Plextor. If you buy a new one ask for help picking one on TSG, the bargain hounds will find you the best deal.
