Is there a way that provides an on screen message indicating that mail has arrived?

not that i know of.
download msn, and that will provide a screen saying when you have mail

The only notification there is the Sound notification. You can change it in the Sound Properties in Control Panel. Good thing about that is you can make your own sound for that too.

Not in OE, and there won't be any utilities to do it either as OE doesn't expose any com properties, methods or hooks.

BUT...Mozilla's Thunderbird does and isn't much different from OE apart from all the extra features, and it's free. I use it, and Firefox which beats the hell out of IE

Mozilla were the lot that made Netscape before AOL bought it up (and effed it up too)

Another email handler you may like to try is Incredimail. Try http://www.incredimail.com/english/index.html

The basic version is free and does a great job.

I have been using incredimail now for over a year without a single problem.
