Hi There-

To start with, I have a Dell dimension 8400 operating Windows XP and have a beginner’s level education in PC’s, so please be patient with me… :)

Beginning yesterday I have a number of pop ups about Trojans as well as security alerts popping up on my PC. There is a constant yellow flashing sign with an exclamation point in the bottom right corner near the clock. The three Trojans mentioned are [email protected] Trojan, [email protected] and PSW.x-Vir Trojan. I have McAfee Security Center and use Adaware, but neither seems to be doing the trick, and am not sure how I picked this up in the first place either. If you need any additional information please let me know but below is my HJT log… please help!!! Nothing I try seems to be working. Thanks in advance!!!

-Krissy

Welcome to TSG :)

Please download SmitfraudFix
to your Desktop.
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I'm not sure what happened but my PC automatically downloaded some updates this evening and it detected malware and removed it... now i am no longer receiving the many, many pop ups and the flashing yellow triangle is no longer down by the clock. For about three hours it seems as though my PC is now working the way it should. Any idea if this is a permanent fix or is there a chance it's still dormant somewhere in my PC or running in the backgroud? Below are my HJT and SmitfraudFix logs... Thanks!

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

========================================

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

I am no longer receiving any pop ups and no longer have the yellow triangle in the bottom right corner as a result of the updates my pc did on its own yesterday... is it possible that whatever i had has been removed by any of my programs? I dont want to run what you've suggested in your second post without confirmation b/c your warning said they are not to be run if the pc is clean b/c it could cause a problem... please let me know that you've read the second scans i did and then i'll do your directions... thanks!

Could you run SmitfraudFix again, but run option #1. Post the results. This will tell me if you are clean or not.

Everything is running fine now.. no pop ups and no yellow flashing triangle in the bottom right corner... how do things look from the logs? Is everything good to go?

Thanks so much!!!

Everything looks good.

You can delete the following files and folder from your Desktop:
SmitfraudFix.exe

SmitfraudFix

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Ugrading Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u5.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Now that your system is clean you should SET A NEW RESTORE POINT to prevent future reinfection from the old restore point AFTER cleaning your system of any malware infection. Any trojans or spyware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore and are waiting to re-infect you. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete files, trapping viruses inside. Setting a new restore point should be done to prevent any future reinfection from the old restore point and enable your computer to "roll-back" in case there is a future problem.

To SET A NEW RESTORE POINT:
1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
2. Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
3. Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
4. Click "OK".
5. Click the "More Options" Tab.
6. Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Graphics for doing this are in the following links if you need them.
How to Create a Restore Point.
How to use Cleanmgr.

Here is some useful information on keeping your computer clean:
  1. Most important thing is to make sure Windows is kept up to date with the latest patches and updates from Windows Update.
  2. Here are two great Preventive programs:
    • SpywareBlaster protects you from malicious ActiveX controls and cookies. Make sure and check for updates twice a month.
    • IESpyads adds a long list of bad sites to your Restricted sites in Internet Explorer and protects against drive by downloads.
  3. Surf Safe with McAfee's SiteAdisor. SiteAdisor will work with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. SiteAdisor is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. SiteAdvisor uses the following color codes to indicate the safety level of each site.
    • Red for Warning
    • Yellow for Use Caution
    • Green for Safe
    • Grey for Unknown

Here are the link to install SiteAdisor in Internet Explorer and Firefox
  4. Anti-Spyware Programs I Recommend:
