Notebook Fan Seems to Have a Mind of its Own

I've had my trusty GQ/ECS notebook w/VIA chipset for over a year now and it's done great work for me with virtually no problems of any sort under tons of work. :)

One thing that I have never understood, though, and that's the utter unpredictability of the cooling fan. I have never experienced thermal shutdown, but sometimes the fan comes on when the notebook seems cool, but not when it seems very hot. Sometimes it comes one for a minute, then goes off -- but will sometimes stay on until it seems like it's going to make ice cubes.

It's very mysterious. Live Linux CDs seem to shut it off entirely, and some fan speed diagnostic program (which was probably not for notebooks) also shuts it down, I think.

It could be that this thing is operating correctly, but according to some complex system I just don't understand yet.

Any thoughts on this?
