Hiya

You may also want to do a bit of a cleanup. Go to Control panel | Internet Tools. General tab. Under Delete Tempory Internet Files, DON'T delete offline content.

Also, have you defragged lately?

We may also want to have a look at your startup programs. Go to Run and type MSINFO32. If you get an error go to Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Information.

On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste. If you cannot, Look under File for Save as Text File. Then, just highlight all and paste here.

Hi Eddie,
Like CJ my Outlook freezes anytime I go into it. I tried your suggestions but am getting a bit confused. When you go into software environment/startup programme.....What are you copying/pasting????????????????
Also my computer is only 2 months old so I don't think the rest applies(although I have done them also.) I am at the moment using Pegasus, which is OK but does not have the same features that Outlook has.

Hiya Portree52

When you're in the Startup Programs part of System Information, there are a load of programs showing in the right hand box. If there is no copy/paste as I don't think there will be in XP, it might be the same as 2000.
Just go to Action | Save as Text File
Then, save it somwhere you can find it, like in My Documents. Then, when you're here and replying, just highlight all and copy/paste here.

Okay

Lets have a look here:

CTFMON.EXE: CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don't need these features. Have a look here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q282599

Bootminder: not sure, but other XP users may know.

MSMSGS: MSN Messenger utility starts up automatically every time you start Windows. If you don't use MSN Messenger, this can be annoying. Available via Start -> Programs - not required. Need to delete a registy key relating to msmmsge.exe if you disable it

IEWindowKiller: You'll need this if you're wanting to stop those popup windows, though I can't find much on a search. You could try and see what happens if you remove this. You can always put it back.

Microsoft Office: Resource hog that launches common Microsoft Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Osa9.exe is the Office 2000 equivalent. Some users claim there's no difference with our without it but it isn't required anyway

Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders: Produces a pop-up reminder of events scheduled using the MS Works Calendar. Not required

C-Media Mixer: not sure, but could be your SoundCard.

AVG_CC: AVG anti-virus control center. Loads a System Tray icon that let's you access the antivirus program. Also enables the E-mail pluggin

WorksFUD: A marketing program for Microsoft Works. Not required.

Microsoft Works Portfolio: The Works Portfolio tool lets you collect and organize text and pictures from the Web or your favorite program. The Works Portfolio provides a location where you can store items you want to later put into a document or other file. Not required

Microsoft Works Update Detection: Checks for updates to MS Works. Not required

Okay, for the ones that you don't want, go to Run and type MSCONFIG. Startup tab. Uncheck all that you don't want, apply and restart. If you're unsure, do each seperately, but apply and restart after each one.
