I recently upgraded from 98 to 2000 and have tried to reinstall my printer (icon does show in printer folder) but when you try to print, nothing happens. I get a plug-n-play detection error. What do I need to do?
Thanks for your help.

Do you have the W2K drivers for the printer?

Howdy kmb13...

Which HP printer do you have ?

Also when you installed W2K did you do it as an upgrade install, or a fresh install ?

If the 832C is anything like the 842C, then you need completely different drivers depending on how you connect (parallel or USB).

Have you tried to download both versions of the drivers?

Yes, I have tried to download the drivers from the HP website and I just keep getting the same "does not detect plug and play" message.
Maybe if I received the file from someone and saved it to open from my computer that would work ????

Okay, HP site indicates that USB connection is only supported in Win98; so you will have to use parallel connection.

Second, when you are downloading, are you saving to disk first, then double clicking on the driver file? Sounds like you are trying to run the software from the internet....

Hmmm...

In addition...

Go into Device Manager, and see if there are any yellow ! marks...

Also while you are there, check under Com ports and see what the LPT port is ( ECP or EPP )...

OK - well I'll definitely use the parallel then. Seems odd that a newer version wouldn't be supported by USB. I tried saving it as well and then running it but it didn't work

You may also want to go back to that HP site and get the install instructions...follow them EXACTLY.

For instance, if it is trying to detect your printer, but it isn't turned on...guess what...you'll get the "does not detect plug and play printer".....

I've also seen this on my Lexmark Z22 printer when the LPT port was set to EPP ( had to set it to ECP to get it to work )...
