On a friends pc, whenever I run liveupdate, the virus defs update, but the Anti-Virus program will not update. It says it cannot update the savrtgui.dll...research shows that this is related to Auto-Protect by Symantec. I have uninstalled the program using the RNAV, RNIS, and even Symclean tools. I have also downloaded the registry removal tools. Made sure all of the associated folders were deleted as well as the Symantec folder in the Registry under HKLM & HKCU. And after all of this, on a SUPER Clean install, it loads fine, but I still get the error that savrtgui.dll cannot be updated.

There is no info on symantecs site in ref to this file, but to the Anti-virus not being updated...and I have performed there 3 steps to no avail. Someone mentioned uninstalling the program completely AGAIN, and unregistering the dll, have not tried that. Surely there must be a better way. The OS is 98SE.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance.

If you look thru this forum you'll see hundreds of people having issues with Norton products and its the same story on every forum. I have long since ditched all Symantec products. I've found that AVG and ZoneAlarm do a better job while using less resources and causing much less problems. Plus they are both 100% free.

I personall have used Norton products for years, and have never had problems. Now, his pc is a 5 year old Gateway running 98se, so I am sure that is half the troubles. However, he has spent good money on these products already, so he would like them to work. Any ideas on a solution? Can you un-register a dll in 98?

Well the first thing I would do is install the latest version of LiveUpdate - manually.
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/lu/lu.html - surprisingly works to fix many things. There's also a Downloads folder in C:\windows\Application Data that can be deleted and then re-run LiveUpdate. Clear the Windows TEMP folder as well.

When you uninstalled the Symantec programs did you delete the Symantec folders under C:\Program Files\Common Files\ and under C:\Windows\Application data\ ? I usually use the Search feature to find all files on the hard drive named sym* and remove them as well as making note of what folders they are in. I then check the folders and see if they are solely used by Symantec and if they are I remove the entire folder. Of course remove the Symantec/Norton folders under C:\Program Files\ - this is all after removing all Norton products, including LiveReg and LiveUpdate from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Then I would run the RNAV, RNIS, and follow the manual removal instructions. Empty out the C:\windows\temp\ folder. From the registry find and remove all Symantec refreshes/keys. Remove any savrtgui.dll as well. Then run the Windows installer cleanup utility to remove any Symantec entries. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301 You can use a Registry cleaner if you like to remove any left over if you wish. Next run Windows Update and get ALL the Critical Updates and most of the Recommended Program updates if not all(I like to get them all).

Now reinstall the Symantec product.

Thanks, but I have tried all of the steps you listed and symantecs site listed. I have also tried to install the updated LU-lt.exe. I guess the only thing I have not tried to unregister the dll. So that shall be my last step prior to trying a different anti-virus or suggesting a new pc to replace his soon to be antique. Thanks for all of your suggestions.

Alright, so I renamed the savrtgui.dll to .old, rebooted and reloaded NIS 04 and that fixed the Anti-Virus program update. However, I still cannot update the Redirector. I have found loads of people who are having the same issue, but I have found no fixes. Any ideas???

Thanks in advance

Thank anyways, I found the fix. I used a Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and removed the Symantec Network update, and that resolved the last issue. Thank you for all of your help.
