I cannot receive audio on my computer. The device that appears as Audio is:
audio codecs
legacy audio drivers
Orion 040909
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
All plugs are in. I have tried everything I know how to do. I would appreciate your help. Thanks!

I did a system restore. On Volume Control I left "mute all" unchecked; however, on Wave, SW Synth, etc., they are checked as "mute." Is this correct??

I think Denz was referring to question marks (?) under Sound, video, game controllers. This is just checking that your system recognizes those devices.

Not doing anything wrong. We just want to make sure that no stones are left unturned so to speak. Try a different speaker if you have one or borrow one from a friend..if new speakers work, then your old speakers are the problem. If new speakers don't work as well, uninstall you audio in the device manager. Just right click on it & choose uninstall/remove device. Restart your PC.

By the way, is your audio integrated or an expansion card?

I do believe my speakers are working as I hear static when I turn them on. I think the audio is integrated. Under device manager, related to audio, I see:
audio codecs
legacy audio drives
Sound Max integrated Digital audio
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
I'm not sure which audio to uninstall.
I should downgrade my "expertise" to beginner from Intermediate. This is all new to me.

Don't rule out the possibility that the speakers are plugged into the WRONG JACKS!

For example, the Mic Jack, or the Line In Jack, etc.

Dear Darth_Denz,winbob,Insdick and Drama,
It's working. Thank you ever so much for all your help! Of course it had to be the most elemental solution like making sure the speaker was plugged into the right jack -- although I was sure I had checked that. I feel as foolish as when I paid $85 for an air conditioning service call and all he did was put the plug in! You guys are great.
