I posted about a week or two here about my computer hanging on bootup. I got it to start loading windows until the point that it says that hal.dll is corrupt, which I know means that the MBR is screwed up. I found out that my main drive actually has bad sectors which keeps screwing the drive up. So my first thought was to use a livecd to boot and back up my files. The only problem...is that my DVD drive isn't powering at all. I thought it was plugged in right, I have a normal power connector going into it (nothing else is connected to that particular wire), and the IDE cable is plugged in right and i'm sure of that. However I have no way to test if my IDE cable is broken, could that be a cause of this problem?

Well, first off, try a different power connector. If that doesn't do it, it may have died. You should be able to connect just the power connector (not the IDE) power up the system, and open and close the drawer. If that doesn't work, the drive is broken.
