i have a linksys wrt54g. The internet connection (dsl) uses PPPoE, which I have configured correctly. The wired desktop has a spotty connection, and the wireless has not connected to the internet yet. (windows says connection strength is excellent).

Why not solve one issue at a time? If a wired station has problems, I'd fix that first. What does "spotty connection" mean?
