There is probably a really simple answer to this problem, but I've looked in my Windows xp bible and searched MS site (yeah like that's gonna help.

I'm running Windows XP (this monster is new to me). I have my clip art files organized into different folders. While I was organizing them one day the names under the files disappeared. Just poof and they were gone. I've checked on viewing the folders and customizing them to get the names back but nothing I do works. What am I missing here?

Hiya

have you got Windows explorer on Hide known extensions? Windows Explorer. Tools | Options. View. Is Hide File Extensions For Known File Types ticked? If so, untick and see if that helps.

Also, have you noticed this with any other file on your system? You may have a virus.

http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Also, just to be on the safe side, go here and download AddAware www.lavasoftusa.org
Install and run it, ensuring that Deep Registry Scan is enabled. Remove all except any references to Web3000 or new.net. If you're unsure, copy/paste the list here.

Whilst you're there, download RefUpdate, Install and download the latest updates.

Okay I scanned my system. no virus. I already have adware. So I ran that and it found comet cursor stuff that I thought I had deleted. So I deleted all that stuff. (except for the comet cursor items that it couldn't delete). I checked windows explorer hide extensions wasn't ticked.
This is only happening in my clip art folder and all of it's sub-folders in thumbnail view. It wasn't always this way, they used to be named. This is weird:confused:

Okay

Go to Windows Explorer and click on View | Details. Do the names and extensions appear?

For CC, go to AddRemove and see if its there. If it is, uninstall it. Also, lets have a look at your startup programs.
Go to Run and type MSINFO32. On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here. if you cannot, Action | Save As Text file and copy/paste that way.

Okay, I looked in windows explorer, under details the full extension doesn't show up. Under view I went to double check to see if hide file extensions was checked it isn't.

Under add remove programs I don't have anything named cc installed. But I might have misunderstood you on that were you looking for a program called cc or something else?

here is the msinfo32 results:

Hiya

CC was actually Comet Cursor, sorry. Is it still in your Program list?

Having a look at your startup, it looks okay, but lets have a look anyway:

AudioHQ: For Creative Soundblaster Live! series soundcards. System tray application for SB Live! functions. Available via Start -> Programs - not required

CoolSwitch: ???

ctfmon.exe: CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don't need these features

FastUser: Installs as part of Windows XP PowerToys as an option for very-fast user switching (allowing a keystoke to switch users instead of using the login screen). It is only used for the hot-key switch and yet it hogs 1.5 megs of memory in two separate processes (one run by the user & one by the system). 3 megs of memory for one stinking hot-key. It is an optional install in PowerToys

HPDJ Taskbar: 1) Ghostscript device driver for printers understanding Hewlett-Packard's Printer Command Language
or
(2) Creates 1 or all 3 icons on taskbar. The 1st one has a yellow border around it warning that ink is low on the printer. The second one is HP Device Detection Software and the 3rd one is about a card being inserted into the Hp printer

HPHmon03: ????

iamapp: AtGuard personal firewall engine. Required if you're regualrily connected to the internet and this is your firewall

IntelliType: For Microsoft programmable keyboards. If you disable Intellitype in Startup, any "Hot Keys" that are changed by the user to perform functions other than default settings, defer back to their default settings. Not needed unless you have changed them

LVCOMS: Lvcomm server. Related to Logitech Quick Cam - works fine without it. Not required

NAV Agent: keep

POINTER: Microsoft Intellipoint software for their Intellimouse series of mice. Only needed if enable any of the advanced features as Win98/Me supports the basic features by default

WebCamRT.exe: For Logitech Web Cams. Not required - camera works fine without it

WFXSwtch: ???

WinFaxAppPortStarter: WinFax 10.0 and maybe earlier versions. What does it do and is it needed?

Okay, for the ones that you don't need, go to Run and type MSCONFIG. Startup tab. Uncheck those that you don't want, apply and restart. If you're unsure, do each seperately, but apply and restart after each one.

Thats just to speed you up a abit. Back to the problem. For the clipart, are you using a specific program to download them?

Thanks,
I always wanted to know what needs to be in the startup folder. I wish windows would give a more detailed description of what these items are so it would easier to tell what junk you need and what you don't.
Hpmon03 has something to do with Hewlett packard.
wfxswitch has something to do with norton so I'll keep it.

As for the clipart folders when I save them I just right click and save picture as:
Nothing special. and they were all fine the names displayed and everything was rosy until when I went to organize them a little further and the stopped displaying the names. maybe the file names have been abducted by aliens.

Okay

You said that they were fine until you went to organize them a little further. What did you do to organise them?

And these aliens: Are they the same ones who are bleeding my bank account dry? :p

All I did was just open up two windows and click and drag.

But I did fix it. I just opened up a new folder and moved everything into it and the names came back. Now I', sure it's aliens.

Yes these would the same aliens you're reffering to. They are the same one legged aliens that are responsible for the missing sock in the dryer phenomenon...lol
