Hey, I thought I might be able to get some help with a problem I've been having. My OS is WindowsXP.

After coming home from a week-long vacation (no one else was using my computer during the time), I noticed that my internet connection is no longer working properly for my desktop PC. At first it was extremely slow, and stopped working and then started again minutes later, but now it doesn't work at all. Whats strange is that in my network places in my computer, my LAN connection is showing as connected and working properly. My internet connection is coming from a wired ethernet cable hooked up to a Motorola SBV5120 Surfboard cable modem at home, or hooked up to a shared T1 connection at my college (althought I havn't tried it out at school yet). AT first I believed that it was my network card that was malfunctioning, so I went and bought a LinkSys Etherfast PCI Adapter card, which is showing up in my network places as connected, but I'm still unable to browse websites with Internet Explorer (it always shows 'Page Cannot Be Displayed'). The cable modem is working fine with the laptop I'm typing this on, and I also tried hooking my desktop up to the modem using a different cable, but still, no luck.

I'm typing this on seperate laptop, so it will be difficult for me to run something like the HijackThis program and post the log here if I can't connect on the computer (if a virus is whats causing my problem). Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Also, to note I've tried doing the 'Repair Connection' in the network places tab several times, and it doesn't help.

Did you try a system restore to before your vacation?
Did IE get set to "Work Offline" ?
Have you tried another protocol like FTP or Irc?
IE is not set to offline, and I've tried logging on to IRC but couldn't connect. Also, I tried restoring my pc to 3 different dates prior to this past week, and each time after restarting my computer it said that it was unable to restore and undo any changes made.

Your swaps have ruled out modem, nic, ip connection as sources of the problem.

Doesn't that just leave software? And as the new nic probably put in new card software, doesn't that just leave the OS as the problem?

If my reasoning is correct, a repair of WinXP appers to be needed.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Forgive me I'm a newbie at this kind of stuff, so I simply type what you wrote in bold into the command, and it will reset?

Yep, just open a command window and type what John boldly typed in bold. Note that he is assuming that you have Service Pack 2.

And if you forgot to power cycle the modem when connecting the problem computer, try that also please.
