Carl and I are thinking about a weekend getaway to Niagara Falls in April for our 18th anniversary. Has anyone ever been there and if so can you recommend some activities, restaurants, or a hotel (upscale) for us to stay in?

Thanks :)

You are from upstate New York and have never been to Niagara Falls. You are so close. I can't tell you about any of the restaurants because it has been years since I have been there, but Niagara Falls is a place to see.

It is a 6 hour drive from us. :) About 330 miles away, according to Map Quest. :) (we are just below the Cornwall border)

I hope so! Thanks for the thumbs up. Last year we went to Lake George but it was off season and there wasnt much to do other than have a nice meal. We were really hoping for an adventure this year :)

It is also about a 6 hour drive from were I am. We always tend to go there when relitives come to visit from Germany. They all want to see Niagara Falls. We have been there about three times. :)

I stayed at Sheraton on the Falls a couple of years ago and it was great. There are several hotels that face the Falls. You might want to call some of them and see if you can get a room with a window on that side. The Falls are VERY close to the hotels (I was shocked at how close) and the rooms were very inexpensive since the prices are in Canadian dollars. I think we paid $65 Canadian on a weekend. You can check out hotels.com to get an idea of the prices and star ratings. Hope that helps!

You may have paid $65 dollars American but i can gurantee you that a Sheraton Hotel on Niagra Falls wont be 65 Canadian..... that wont even get you a flea infested shack

Oh, and for activities, Maid of the Mist is a gotta-do-it kind of thing. It's a boat that goes very close to the American Falls. You get DRENCHED. There are also some walking trails that take you behind the falls which is kind of neat. The town itself is very strange. I have never seen so many arcades, fun houses, haunted houses and gift shops in one place. It seems to be set up so that teenagers can go off and have fun by themselves after they get bored with looking at the Falls. Unfortunately I can't remember any of the restaurants we went to, but just as a warning, if you happen to sing karaoke at some sort of outdoor Mexican place, be aware that they're piping your singing out onto the street. Not that I experienced that or anything. I just heard stories. :D

Oh, and I can't believe I forgot this earlier, but if you're feeling adventurous, the Whirlpool Jetboat ride is incredible. I highly recommend it, but it's a little scary! http://www.whirlpooljet.com/index2.cfm

You're probably right and I just don't remember because it was a couple of years ago. I think the Sheraton now is $80 American, so there's no way it would have been $65 Canadian. Sorry!

Thanks Wendy :) I've been looking at a few hotels this morning. The thing that confuses me the most is that Niagara Falls claims to be the best place for romantic getaways yet just about every room has 2 beds in it!

The best deal I've found so far for the accommodations we want is at the Renaissance Fallsview Hotel. We can get a room with a view of the falls on the top floor (18th) for 350 bucks for 2 nights. Its sounds like a steal to me...so much so that I worry that there's something wrong with the place.

being the first week of April might make it too cold for that. Carl would love it...I'd probably be scared since I cant swim a lick.

I've seen helicopter tours in some of the package deals so far and they are very reasonable so thats something we might like to do. :)

ROTFL! Thanks for the warning. I will sing to quietly to myself if the urge overtakes me, lol! :D

:D Hey...you havent by chance ever been to a Marriott hotel have you? It looks like a nice place as well. Something that keeps bugging me is that the Renaissance does not show any pics of the views from the rooms at all...I wonder why?

before I forget...Coderitr....I dont like the white noise sound but I will put up with it for the weekend just for the pleasure of the great view. :)

Here's a site with some reviews:

I read a couple of them and it sounds like it's great!

I was there two years ago with my parents. We booked ahead of time at the Days Inn, which are usually ordinary but nice and clean. Not this one. We were dissapointed. I had booked two nights but we only stayed one and then we moved to the Hilton or Holiday Inn (can't remember which), which was much nicer and less expensive as well.

At that time there was a lot of construction going on which was very unpleasant and there were cranes and machines that partially blocked the view of the falls that we had from the room but I'm sure it's all done by now. They were building a new casino complex. Looks like they have some good shows that that you could take in.

There's also Clifton Hill which is the street with lots of museums and things like haunted houses to visit and there are lots of restaurants there too.

While there, I highly recommend taking a 20 minute drive to Niagara-on-the-Lake. It's a quaint town with lots of old fashioned shops and you can take a tour in a horse-drawn carriage.

Here's a link to a great site with tons of information.

Enjoy!

thanks Cookie :) Just had a quick peek at the link and the attractions..the museums really caught my eye!

Wendy...the reviews do look good but I still havent seen anyone say thatt eh view was wonderful so i'm thinking its situated in a way so you cant really see the falls so i might have to look elsewhere.

Embassy Suites Hotel looks nice too but we'd have to go up another hundred bucks and I'm not sure how high hubby is willing to go. He might be willing to splurge though since we only go once a year. :)

Last time I was there, I went to the tropical Gardens (near the falls) and it is beautiful. Also if you follow the river down stream there is a very large Floral Clock. (several feet across) Also a little ways beyond that is place that is a school for horticulture I believe and the students take care of the grounds. It is also quite a nice place to see. Don't forget the vineyards and wine tasting. :)

On top the hill (can't remember the route number) is a money exhange and tourist center where you can get lots of info. I am sure someone can point the way to it.

Here is one site to explore: food and also sites to see

http://www.niagararestaurantguide.com/

Ans here is a link to the tourism site with a lot more info

http://www.tourismniagara.com/online/

You will love it there. There is a lot to do. :)
