Hey all

I have just installed XP for the second time this weekend. Basically my problem is this. I have an NForce 4 Ultra motherboard with AC'97 onboard sound. Windows detects an unknown Multimedia Audio Controller and refuses to see it as an AC'97 compatible device. This is also the same with an oldish Sound Blaster Live card I plugged in. I forced XP to use an INF from the Driver CD (AC'97 here) and now sound works. I was given a list of 25 inf files and didnt know which to pick so I picked the first one. I was then given a list of about 10 Realtek AC'97 devices. I picked one and that got the sound working.

That sound fine but when I play any games (Oblivion is the one I tested this most on) I got odd muffled sounds and sometimes sounds don't even play. What is even weirder is that the sound isn't always bad. Sometimes it will be fine. On Oblivion the main problems are inside buildings. The sound is missing some of its high frequencies and is really bassy.

Can anyone help me get it working correctly? This is a really annoying problem.

Thanks for any help
