I got a new router for the new year it is cordless/cable router .Do I have go to each computer and put in a IP address and gateway address ?

Any thing else I may have to put in or does the cordless/cable router assign it by it self and I don't have to put in any settings?

Also what about the security problem with cordless like someone using my connection or hackers?

The new router will get an Automatic Address from the modem. The internal machine should be set up that way also, DHCP.
You need to chnage the default password on the router, chnage the defualt name of the SSID, and use MAC filtering. This is about as safe as you will get.

Hi,
You can also enable a WEP or WPA encrypted wireless (cordless) connection.

Kind Regards

I have no password or any security on any computer.Do I have to install the CD that came with it on all the computers?

Or just hook it up and install nothing?

You can also enable a WEP or WPA encrypted wireless (cordless) connection.
How would you do that and do you need software for that? And would you have to do it on all the computers?

You need to chnage the default password on the router, chnage the defualt name of the SSID, and use MAC filtering. This is about as safe as you will get.
Okay this is getting very advance what do you mean by change the SSID and use MAC filtering? And I have no password now and do I need a password ?

Also internal machine do I have to put in the settings or does it do it by it self ?

Hi If you could tell me exactly what model router you have got, then I may be able to tell you exactly what to do rather than guessing at what options you have.

Kind Regards

Hi,
Routers vary greatly when talking about the admin panel, although the conent is all the same, where the options are found is different.
Normally there will be a silver or white sticker on the base with all the required information such as make, model etc etc.
Kind Regards

SSID=Set Security Identfier

It's good to chnage it becasue most of us know the default passwords to just about every router made. You will only need passwords on the wireless machines. Chnage the default password to the router also.

If you transmit the SSID, then your computer should detect it, and you can choose to connect to it.

Do not let Windows assign your WEP/WPA key, how the hell does it know your router's key? :D

So I'm not to allow Windows to assign the key I'm to do it my self on all the computers?

If you transmit the SSID, then your computer should detect it, and you can choose to connect to it.
So I assign the SSID name only to one computer and it will transmit to all the computers on the network ?Or do I have to go to all the computers and make sure it finds the SSID name ?

And keep in mind there should only be one SSID name .

If you setup the router with the default options and just change the SSID to a unique one and the encryption option to your choice of WEP or WPA and enter a key, that's all the configuration on that end you need.

On each wireless station, it should find the router's SSID, and when you connect, it'll ask you for the key. Type the same key as you setup in the router.

Note for WEP, you should ALWAYS use the hex key option, not the pass code option.
