New Radeon 9200SE freezes computer

1085 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  compilerxp
G'day, I just bought a new system with Radeon 9200 SE on an ASUS A7V8X-X mobo running XP. There is a growing list of games that I used to be able to play on my old system that had an ASUS 7100 vid card that won't play on the Radeon.

I have the latest drivers, including the latest catalyst drivers.

Games load up then just freeze the whole computer and I have to manually reboot. Some stuff it crashes on : Serene Screen Saver 2, Will Rock, Dungeon Seige, Arkadian 4000

Any help would be appreciated thanks

don't know if this will help but have a few suggestions. Have you tried turning down the resalution on the games that don't work. Also is the card agp if so what type of agp 2,4,8 x, or is it pci. And have you checked to make shure that it is compatible with your board.
thanks.

Have tried turning down the resolution and accelleration. The AGP is 8. I bought the mobo at the same time, it is AGP 8 compatible, but whether it is compatible with the video card, I can't find that one out anywhere
Have these games been reinstalled or copied over?

Right click on the program ICON, click COMPATIBLITY and try Windows98.

Did you build this computer or did you buy it from a shop? Download and install the latest drivers from VIA as well...

When setting up a system, installation as follows:

1 - format HD
2 - Install OS
3 - Install Motherboard chipset drivers (Install a Firewall like ZoneAlarm before connecting Networking cable to HiSpeed Internet)
4 - Install hardware drivers
5 - Update drivers from Microfart *including DX9

(note: For some, switching 4 & 5 maybe better).

6 - Disable M$ junk (Messenger, and the OTHER Messenger, HD Indexing)
7 - Install apps & games.

Thanks for all that, pretty well exactly what I did though, :(

Just wondering, would it be worth trying 98se to see if it freezes there?
On the recent ASUS boards there is a red warning light on the MOBO at the AGP slot. If the graphics card is incompatible this red light will be on. Is this the case?
What is dxdiag saying?

When the video card is INCOMPATIBLE, the red light will come on but the SYSTEM itself will not power up.

The light is to tell you WHY you're not getting power.

Very OLD AGP card and AGP 3DFX cards will not work.

Wouldn't hurt... again... old HDs are handy for testing ;)
