I have a problem with my Sony desktop running Windows XP. It seems that it recognizes my currently installed and working HP990 printer every 5-10 minutes and the Install New Hardware Wizard pops up.

I can''t respond to anything since it just tells me that installation failed. HP suggested that it is related to the USB plug and detect which detects the printer periodically, but I don't know how to turn it off.

Any suggestions?

If you turn off the USB port if that is even possible you won't be able to prinyt. Try a different USB port or remove the printer and its drivers and try reinstalling it.

hey knute97
the hardware wizard is one of those XP programs that gets triggered by an event like 'plugging in' . i agree with the last post in that you can try to reinstall but it could also be occuring due to a loose connection to the USB plug-in internally, then every time it shorts out the connection the wizard thinks you are plugging in again. Try to isolate the problem by plugging in another device to the same usb port ... if the wizard doesnt pop .. then you have a short in your connection wire. I am not saying that you may not need to reinstall your software agin, but keep in mind that it could be a hardware short in the wire as well.
