I have this same variant and CWShredder V. 1.56.1 doesn't help and like
someone said earlier, this variant spits out random named dll's so posting
my log probably won't help. That elusive source file seems to be the main
culprit. How far along is the "fix?."

first download this text file and save it to desktop, then rename it to searchxfix.reg you will need to use it a bit later on
then
Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\icid.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\icid.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\icid.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\icid.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\icid.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\icid.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://find4u.net/index.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D55294C-01BC-451D-B6DB-7AED83E48F14} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\icid.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE

Click "Apply" then "OK"

Delete these files

C:\WINDOWS\System32\icid.dll
c:\filter.log

Now double click on the searchxfix.reg file on the desktop and yes to the prompts to merge with the registry

then
Reboot normally & it should akll have gone, post new log to check please

I'll come back to this thread either tonight

O.k., I did as you advised (dvk01) with the exception of deleteing
the C:\WINDOWS\System32\icid.dll & the c:\filter.log
I couldn't find these files anyware in my system.

Also, I couldn't get the searchxfix.reg to "merge" with my registry
because their were no prompts telling me to after I opened
it from my desktop...

Anyways here's the "post" fix log:

I'll try this tonight and let you know if it works! :)

$teve said:
Ive just tried this on another poster and so far its worked......

Copy the bold text to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as remove.reg (make sure you save as type: 'all files') Dont merge it yet.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/plain]

Download the latest CWShredder.

Click on th icon to bring it up but dont run it.

i) From the Start Menu go Start > Shutdown. This displays the system shutdown confirmation dialog.
ii) Press and hold Shift + Ctrl + Alt at the same time. While holding these three keys use the mouse to click the Cancel button.
Explorer will now shutdown.

Hit fix mode on shredder.....after its finnished Ctrl-Alt-Delete and restart explorer with the new task button.

Merge the regfile that you created.

Re-boot and this SHOULD be the last of it.
;)

I don't pretend to know what's going on with ALTYHOLIC's computer, but it looks like the latest version worked! I did not try $teve's instructions, but I will if it comes back again.
Capt. Morg-

You mean the latest version of CWShredder (V. 1.56.2) worked
for you? It so congrats...

For me, it just did the same thing as V. 1.56.1 did... :(
It takes off the dll's and restores my hompage, only temporarily
until the next re-boot and then it's back to about:blank...

You posted your last log in Captain Morg's thread again. Please stick with this (your) thread.

I split that log from his thread and merged it with this one. I am going to change the Title of this on to New CWS hijack so you can tell which is yours.

Let's try this:

Download this zip.

http://www.zero.vulc4n.com/downloads/pv.zip

unzip it to the desktop.

Be sure to have at least 1 internet explorer window open.

Double click on the explorer.bat

Notepad will open with a log in it. Please copy and paste the log into this thread.

What operating system are you running?

You have cut off the top part of every log that you have posted. We need to see that part to. It has pertinent info that helps us help you.

The top part looks like this:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7
Scan saved at 9:19:58 PM, on 3/29/2004
Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)

From now on post that part too when you post a log.

Now tell me what Operating System are you running?

Ok you're running XP so here's how to run the pv.zip. The guy that developed the tool changed it yesterday.

Run it like this:

unzip it to the desktop.

Be sure to have at least 1 internet explorer window open.

Double click on the runme.bat

This will open a command window. In the command window enter the digit 1 by hitting the 1 key on your keyboard and then hit the Enter key.

Notepad will open with a log in it. Please copy and paste the log into this thread.

Yep that's what I was looking for.

This is the hidden file I was looking for:

61c00000 61440 c:\windows\system32\hlplo.dll

If you do not already have it Click here to download CWShredder. UnZip the file, but do not run it yet.

Now download TheKillbox from here:

http://download.broadbandmedic.com/VbStuff/KillBox.zip

Unzip the files to the folder of your choice.

Now go offline and Do Not go back online until these procedures are completed.

Unzip the files to a folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following:

c:\windows\system32\hlplo.dll

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". On the next screen, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The c:\windows\system32\hlplo.dll listing should show up in the window. If that's successful, choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

Finally click on the cwshredder.exe and then click "Fix" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

When it is finished restart your computer.

When you're back in windows, check to see if there's any change in the search problem and report back. Please also post a new Hijack This log. along with a new explorer.bat log.

IMPORTANT!: To help prevent this from happening again, I strongly recommend you install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits.

The simplest way to make sure you have all the security patches is to go to Windows update and install all "Critical Updates and Service Packs"

Thanks flrman1... :)

I think that fix finally took care of it!!!
My homepage seems stable and my Hijack This log looked
clean. I'll post a follow up
(obviously) if it comes back.

One quick question, was that hlplo.dll the
crapware generator that was spitting out
all the random dll's, and bho's that this variant of
SearchX (about:blank) was feasting off of???
