Network setup help

817 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Kidittar
Hi!

I am trying to set up a home network with 2 computers. I bought a Category 6 Ethernet Cable from an electronics store, the guy there told me all that I had to do was plug it into the ethernet connection on my computers, which I have done. I have used the network setup wizard but I have the message
"Local Area Connection a network cable is unplugged"
I have checked that they are plugged in properly (they are), I have no idea what else to do or if I need any other equipment? I am a real beginner in this (I didn't even know that I could do a home network until the guy at the electronics store told me I could). Please HELP!!!!?

If you are trying to connect from one network card to another (just between two computers with nothing in between), you have the wrong cable. A standard Ethernet cable will connect you to a router, switch, hub, etc., but not to another computer. What you need is a crossover cable. It looks just like the cable you have, with one change, the wires on one end are switched (the orange and green wires on the cable end are reversed).

Either get a crossover cable adapter (which is a little dongle that connects to one end of a cable), or swap the cable you have for a crossover cable. I would suggest the former, since you will need it if you ever set your network up to share the Internet.
